The comparison to the X7 is very interesting. Do they just ship the X5s without any QC or just don’t care when issues are detected during QC?

That's not an apples-to-apples comparison unless each vehicle being compared were configured exactly the same. Many of the problems we're bumping into as owners are the result of poor validation on the part of BMW and their suppliers.

My guess is that the sheer volume of X5s greatly outnumbers the newly introduced x7, which also is a lot more expensive properly equipped. I’m sure they feel a lot of pressure to crank out all of those x5s as fast as possible, whereas the x7s probably have a more sane pace of construction.

I’m really interested in the x7, but I’ve been pricing them online and are about $20k more than my X5 cost a month ago. In a few years, when I trade, it will definitely be a top contender.

When I talked to my SA he said the X7 had the same issues as the X5. Drivers assistance errors and the like. Anything iDrive/electronic should be hosed in both. First year teething.

I have a 2019 X5 40i -- I have had problems on quite a number of occasions with the A/C compressor switching off a few minutes into the drive even when it's like 95 degrees out when I'm on Auto mode. When investigating, I would find that the Climate Control selector was unselected (I was sure I had kept it selected beforehand). Once I click that again, or when I click the Max Air button, the compressor comes back on and cold air resumes. Very annoying.

I also have problems with my second row right seat not aligning with the left and middle seats (i have the third row option) when the seats are electronically adjusted to the rear most position (the left seats seem to recline half an inch more than the right) . Today the rear right seat unlocked warning came on and won't switch off...

I think BMW lost this "first year teething problems" thing a couple of years back. About time to put on the big-boy pants if they want to play in the same playground as the other Germans....

MB and Audi have had more than their fair share of first year issues over the last few years. Which German Marques are you referring to?

Anyone having issues with late more recent builds? Lingering, underlying unresolved issues?

I've experienced the exact same issue with the AC cold air not coming in even though I left it on Auto. I have to press the Max Air button to get it to engage and then set everything back to Auto. It's happened maybe 3 times since the approximately 7 weeks I've owned the car.

I use the camera extensively when in drive thru lanes (yes, I'm one of the X5's in the Starbucks line). On occasion, I have to press the camera button twice. NBD but just mentioning.

This is all on a 20' 40i.

Are you sure you have the A/C turned on? The Auto button will not turn on the A/C, you need to engage it either with the button or in the iDrive menu.

What happened to me once or twice like in Turtlboys post. : if you push the ac side of the "ac menu" button you actually turn it off.

The letters AC in the display turn red or white but I always forget what color is on or off. It is not really clear.

If you open the menu the ac checkbox is unchecked. You can switch it on again by pushing the AC button or checking the box.

I observe the need to press the Parking Camera button twice sometimes all the time. It's a bug and observation gives strong hints as to where the bug resides. When it fails to activate the camera display, you'll notice that the green light beside the Parking Camera button is lit green. When lit, I think it is intended to indicate that you're in parking mode and so I think one piece of software still thinks it is showing you the camera (but isn't actually showing you the camera). So the first press actually turns the (non-existent) camera display off and the second turns it back on (for real now). The situation happens when you are in parking camera display and then force it off with another function (Media, Map, Home, whatever). So the bug is that when a user forces camera display off, some other piece of software doesn't know it and thinks you are still seeing the camera display.

With that analysis, this should be a 30min fix for BMW engineers ... if they actually listened to customers and accepted bug reports. They don't. Screw them.

Where BMW hosed their customers was the first year buyers. The iDrive 7 is noticeably better in the 2020 model year. The drivers assistance view is just one example. What is the hold up why they don’t firmware update it to the early 2019 that are equipped with the hardware??? It seems like they have moved on and only addressing 2020 models with support.

I currently have 3/2020.58 loaded in our X7. Is the X5M using that or newer? If not what is the most recent update available for the F95?

Very frustrated with all the tech issues and BMWs delay and failure to address them. May well be my last BMW. I've been a loyal customer with 14 BMWs purchased including 2 buybacks.
So glad I'm leasing the X5. No way I'd keep it especially once the warranty has expired. With this damn pandemic it has very low miles with no wear and tear as we are empty nesters with no dogs. Residual will be considerably more than true market value so no way I'll purchase and then trade.

Dead on here, I had 19 and the system was sluggish and strange at times. Nothing really bad with it but since I bought the 21 I didnt know it could be this damn good! After a bit of searching and talking its my impression that the 21 are even different than the 20's. Apparently there was a redesign of the hardware in early 20's and the 21's some late 20's have different computing hardware. Just sure wish I knew exactly what was different or improved but you can tell on my 21 its razor fast just like my cell phone. Also quick note the nav is much better with voice commands too.

Like you, if I didn’t own both versions and compared them back to back, i wouldn’t have believed there is that much of a difference. It’s just everything is faster and more fluent. Like a completely different processor?? Load times are faster when starting the car. From my forum reading, it looks like BMW updated the iDrive in the X7 for the later 2019 production models and X5 in the 2020 model range. We went from seeing annoying reboot issues to very seldom requiring to reboot at all. I am not so naïve to believe we will never have to do the 30 second reboot but it was all the time with the 2019 X5.

I sure hope they fixed that for the 2021 - the tech in my 2018 M4 works great, no issues.
