In the case of BMW, probably because Remote Start works, the defroster is pretty good and it adds additional expense. But anything's possible. I believe Audi offered it in Europe on at least one of their cars, but don't know how many takers.

Ford haves it even on fiesta. Mercedes haves it even on cargo cars. Costs always around 300 euro. When you leave for example in Eastern Europe is a must I would pay even 3000.

Heads up display does not work with heated glass... check out Volvo list of options on the XC90. If you get the heated glass option, it cancels out the heads up display.

Their newest GLE can have both heated windshield + HUD. One thing I don't like GLE's implementation is their heated windshield must be activated with front defroster, there is no button for it. Heated windshield can block transponder signal, and there is specific locations where you must use to mount the transponder. |

Just checked on UK configurator and heated windscreen not available on X5 also cannot see heated steering wheel, my wife has just bought a new mini with heated windscreen (£150), odd as it is built by BMW. Heated windscreen and heated steering wheel are not available on the UK GLE.

Heated windshield has wiring through glass, impede with clear vision on night and some other sun reflecting,at least in Range rover.
Plus defrosting works very effective and fast in X5, I'm assuming some sort of additional electrical heat element, when car is cold.

I had this in my Mini 14 years ago and in a Ford that was even older. The wires in the Ford were much finer and in a denser pattern than the Mini but both were really effective, especially for demisting. Although trying to convince people not to wipe and smear the windscreen was hard!

The older generation e32 & e38 7 series have a section of the lower windshield heated. But it was to prevent the windshield wipers from freezing to the base of the windshield:

To the manufacturers who offer the option of a heated windscreen, it is IMO one of the most underrated, usefull and cost effective standard fit/factory options available.
Some UK VW's have heated screens which use an electrical current without the use of fine wire elements but they are not as effective as the wire element based technology. I have had it in several cars and it is a god send during cold frosty winter mornings. Regarding the visibilty of the elements in the windscreen. Yes you can see them if you look hard enough but they are hardly a distraction. I have found they are more noticeable during night driving when headlights catch the elements at certain angles. As Mini use the element based heated windscreen I do think it would be a very popular option if not a standard factory fit. I for one would put it at the top of my option list! |
