#%$#@!! Only a month old

Bad rain/wind storms on Long Island today with new X5 parked in driveway. Walked out the door to go get lunch and saw in horror the basketball hoop that's been in the driveway for 20 years lying on the ground right next to the car.

First, it bounced off the hood putting nice dent in it, then shattered the windshield and on it's way back down left some scuff marks on the quarter panel for good measure.

Left some scuff marks on the hood as well, but PPF definitely saved more damage.

Ouch... sorry to hear. I've always had this fear about driveway basketball hoops falling on a car in the driveway (or worse, a person)

It's been there 20 years. never budged - Hurricanes, storms, you name it. Was always so close to the house/garage there was really no way for wind to get behind it. Had some work done recently and thinking about it now, i think it was moved a bit. probably just enough, and far away enough from the house to allow the wind to get it.

What's pissing me off is that i just started saying to myself last week that i should get rid of it. My son isn't at home anymore, and we're planning on changing the garage doors so i was going to get rid of it anyway.

Sorry to hear that, I'm in a similar situation except it was a tree that came down in my driveway and smashed my Silverado yesterday. Luckily the bmw was in the garage.

Sorry to hear that. It's not a comparison, but driving back from factory delivery in March I got two deep rock chips on the hood. I ended up touching them up myself and now PPF. Just saying feel your pain, albeit your damage is more severe. Hopefully an easy repair.

Congrats! Mine should be done this week and then back to the detailer to reapply PPF and ceramic coating. I really miss the car, can't wait to get it back.

i think i should just get rid of this car now. there's some bad juju or something going on with it. So, after the initial incident posted here, i finally got the car back from the shop yesterday. glass replaced, new hood, fender replaced. looks awesome.

Drove it home, no problem. drove it this morning, no problem. I get in the car this afternoon to go get something to eat and i see a 7" crack in the windshield!! I did not hear anything or feel since yesterday that I took a rock to the window. the only thing that happened was i hit a pretty good pot hole, front left tire (crack is on right side). I'm so pissed.

I thought it may have been a defect or installation issue but there is a VERY tiny nick, which i'm sure the dealer will say was the impact. so, it appears it went from nothing to 7" in a couple of hours. Bad karma with this car.

Dude. So sorry to hear. I feel your pain. You are being tested for some reason by a higher power (God)!

Good luck!

It does seem strange that you picked up the car with a brand new windshield yesterday and today it has a 7" long crack. How many miles have you driven it since picking it up and at what speeds?

How many miles did the repair shop put on it, do you know? Maybe something hit the windshield during their test drive(s). I would think you would have heard something hit your windshield in such a quiet car so if you didn't, then...hmmmmm. I would take it right back, show them the crack and start asking questions about who drove it, how many miles, on which roads at what speeds.

All it takes is the right impact/vibration to relieve the stress in the form of a crack, which could have been that pretty good pothole you said you ran over. Doesn't really matter which side of the car the pothole was on or which side of the windshield the nick was on. I have seen where people have taken a rubber hammer to a small rock chip in a windshield and made it into a long crack, its not hard to do.

the dealer did the windshield about 3-4 weeks ago. took the car back and had it for about a week or so. during the time i had it, I had to do a drive from L.I. to Baltimore. no issues and didn't see/recall any big hits to the windshield.

So, about a week after getting windshield done brought to body shop. it was there about 3 weeks and picked it up yesterday. all i can think of was there was the small nick and the pothole must have accelerated the crack. it went from me seeing nothing to a 7" crack in about 3 hours.

I hate messing with windshield. it's an integral piece of the structural safety of the car and i never feel it can be replaced as well as when it's done at the factory.

That should be the least of concern. If you get an OEM one you will have nothing to worry about. Here in AZ I get about 1 every year due to rocks its just the way it is here. Never once have I had one done incorrectly and if it was they would re-do the work.

OP,

Would you mind showing us the pics before and after the repair? Just curious. Sorry that you have to go through all these.
