not into my x5
barely 5000 miles but i just dont like the x5 anymore.. im not sure if its the size or the feel or lack of feel. we rarely use the 3rd row anyway. switching suvs.... getting a stelvio quadrifoglio - factory order. misses not too happy atm but itll be months before the car comes and plus she dont drive anyway.
im so surprised because i absolutely loved the x5 at first. maybe i shouldve gotten the m50i. |

Yup think if you're a petrol head you need to have the M50i or the X5M to really enjoy these cars otherwise they are just very nice luxury SUVs. Brilliant but never going to give you any sense of occasion or "wow".
I absolutely love my M50i. |

I understand your sentiment, and the desire for more performance. I've been a gearhead and auto enthusiast for over 30 years.
I looked into the Stelvio Q4 pretty seriously as well. When the X3M was released... it was a no-brainer..... and then when the X5M50i was released, the decision was that much easier for me. Q4 is fast.... beautiful..... and impressive to drive spirited. ..... and is an absolute piece of crap. Plastic filled interior, outdated and small infotainment, terrible sound system, noisy/rattley interior (not in a good way), and absolutely brutally harsh to drive on a daily basis. Oh..... and I won't even mention AR's track record for reliability.... or lack thereof. With all that said, I have EVERY intention of buying a 4C when I get back to the US, for the occasional "weekend" or "track day" drive. But I know AR makes terrible, uncomfortable cars... and would NEVER be delusional enough to expect to use it as a daily driver. The Q4 is the SUV version of the 4C. Great for occasional use... terrible for daily use. And... it's a very fun, very beautiful.... piece of crap. At least I know this going into it with the right expectations. The 4C is the best modern version of a 70-76 Porsche 914 (my favorite car of all time).... but once again, I understand that 914s are pieces of crap too. 100% emotion... and 0% sensibility. I can understand not wanting the X540i anymore. I get it. But there are MUCH better choices if you are in the market for a small/midsize performance SUV..... specifically, the X3M. It's just an all-around better, higher quality, more reliable car. You'll love the Q4 for about a month or 2..... and then come to the realization that with the exception of spirited track-driving..... you hate almost everything about it. Life's too short to spend it with a car you don't love, I'd have done the same thing. Good luck with your new ride once you get it

I applaud the decision and totally get it, as I have gone through a similar situation but the other way round.
Had an F16, got a Porsche Cayman, and ended up just not happy with it as - for me - sacrificed too much comfort and utility for just driving experience, and ended up ordering an G06 6 months after buying the Porsche. Was criticised by a lot of friends, but I gotta do what makes me happy. Just be careful what you wish for, I regretted getting rid of the F16, so be sure what you're after.

Good, thoughtful response, but can you help us understand when a noisy/rattley interior is a good thing?

Im genuinely surprised at how many people understand and can see my point of view.
I normally agree with the base models suck but the g05 40i is one of the best base model cars out there, i really feel that way. I guess the x5 is just not my type of car. Before the deposit on the stelvio we also cross shopped the macan gts and of course the x3 m. The only available test drive macan was the S and it felt very bland to me, definitely not the car for me. It did show me how good the GTS would be but there are 2 other very strong contenders. My wife told me no matter what car i get she will be ok with it. She really did not like the stelvio tho haha. She said it looked like a honda to her 🤨 I think bmw has a better track record than alfa but alfa did missed a lot of years here. I also personally feel like bmw has better customer service and service of any kind in general. The x3m is fantastic in every sense of the word. I picked the stelvio because of that 2.9L v6 and the exhaust just sound so damn good. I also think its a better looking car and i couldnt tell the difference between both seats. I did not get to test drive the quad, only a lower trim model but it already sold me. Infotainment really doesnt matter too much because even with the x5, all we use is blue tooth for music. But yeah stelvios "idrive" sucks. My final thought, the only bmw i really want is the m2c or the up coming m3/4. I would never buy the giulia quadrifoglio - even somehow we get 3 pedals. |

Question: are you sure you want an SUV / Crossover? It sounds like what you are looking for is a different kind of car completely. Check out the RS6 wagon if its in your range of affordability. That might float your boat.

I came from an F15 X5, and I have noticed the G05 is a larger (maybe floatier ..? - not sure if thats the right word) SUV. It took some time, but I've gotten used to it and like it, but like some others have said, maybe a large SUV is not for you.
If you need something with a sharper ride, I agree that maybe an X3/X4 or GLC will suit you better. I think the Alfa stelvio quadrifoglio will probably suit you better as its in that same "class" - Good Luck and I hope it works for you. For me, once the kids are grown up, I'll probably go for something like an X4 with a few steps up in engine HP |

Prepare to have the Stelvio in the dealer being repaired for about 6 months out of the first 12.
I have a friend that has the Julia quadrifoglio and it broken more times than he drives it. This is the one with the cut down Ferrari engine. Not sure what engine the stelvio has but i hope for your sake its more reliable. |

My wife and I drove the 2019 Stelvio Lusso AWD this past February. They didn't have the 500 hp Quadrifoglio on the lot. I like the exterior styling, the Italians know how to do it and have helped design a number of BMW's in the past. The engine was responsive and sounded very nice and is spec'd at about the same 0-60 as the X5 40i at 5.4 sec. However, I just cannot fathom a 4 cyl engine.
Its much smaller than the X5 and has less cargo space and no where near as luxo on the inside, it was very much like sitting in a Mini, lots of round plastic features and sorta George Jetson like. The steering was fantastic, the best I've driven yet...precise, very precise, smooth and quick, loved it. Exterior color choice is pretty wide, they have a very nice green that looks great in person as does their Montecarlo blue and of course their beautiful $2,200 red competition tri-coat. Their four interior colors are limited and were not to our liking, just blah. All in all the high points for us were the steering, engine and exterior looks. Oh yeah, pretty loaded it came in at $56k, about $20K less than a comparable X5 40i. I think it would be fun to own as an around town car, a second car but I just could not see a long term relationship with it or a car to take on long trips. As far as reliability goes, it would scare me since there's no Alpha dealer anywhere near me. Is the X5 actually worth $20K more? I believe so. |
