Just got a VIN, locked now?

Hi,

I just got a VIN on myBMW! Last week we were able to get HK added as an option, it's still in, and I never lost my Air Suspension/Third Row Seat. Does this means I'm locked in?

Thanks!

Yus, getting a VIN is as locked in as you'll get.

Thanks, just don't want them to drop HK again. Had car stereo folks quote me well over $4k to upgrade a few speakers and add an amp/dsp.... Too expensive, so really hoping nothing changes on BMW's part now.

In order to proceed to production, parts for your vehicle had to be ordered. If there was an issue with availability, your order would have been delayed and flagged.

we'll keep our fingers crossed for you! There have been rare instances where the vehicle was missing items unbeknownst to the buyer until taking delivery.

I have been led to believe that once there is a VIN, things are indeed locked. As an example, I was told that the dealer could not legally change the wheels on a car because those were part of the VIN. Just what I was told. I suppose that would not apply to an owner changing wheels.

So is the assignment of VIN simething that happens early or late in the process? Finally moved out of the "order received" to scheduled for production. No VIN yet. Wish I had not lost my AS.

When you hit 150 status, or like 1-2 weeks until production is done.

You get a VIN when it reaches the “production begins” status. Note this doesn’t mean that they are actually assembling your car. It means they are reserving/ordering the components for your car. Actual physical building usually begins 1-2 week later.

VIN assignment happens later in the process.

I also just got my VIN today and the Production Begins notice. Like you I still have the HK but lost the Air Suspension. I was hoping it would become available again prior to production but now that I am in the Production stage with a VIN, I am guessing I am out of luck with getting AS added back.

I think you're right. I think it's locked down. Called the genius today, forgot to ask about the AS, but I don't have any hopes of adding it now. They gave me my assembly date though, 23rd, next week. He said it takes a couple of days to ship out after that. Anybody know how long it takes for shipping to the St. Louis area, doesn't seem too far.

My vehicle is now in "Production Begins" status and has been assigned a VIN. I called BMW Genius and asked about the Air Suspension and they had no idea why the air suspension was dropped from my build, and indicated that there was no one else I can talk to at BMW. They suggested I contact my dealer for further info. Once an option is dropped by BMW, and is not being offered on the BMW build site as an option, are we pretty sure that the dealer is not able to add that option back into the build?

If you’re at Production Begins status, I don’t think you can change anything. That means all the parts for your specific build are allocated and reserved for your build. I doubt your dealer can override that because it messes up the production system.

I read something on a post about air suspension orders in the UK that dealers in the UK were told it will not be an available option for build weeks from 14 to 26. Build week 14 is first week of April. If that is true Are you will to wait another 3 months?

Mine is build week 12 and it got dropped so not sure about this timeline. I know air suspension would have been better for those rides in the city and i was ready to let go off a lil handling to compensate that, but i still cannot make up my mind to deny the vehicle i can get in 2 weeks.
Covid situation is getting worse globally so there can be another shutdown in future and worst supply chain issues. I think i will bite the bullet I just need some push from the people here but most of them are big on Air suspension and that is not making things easier for me 😫

Depends on your build week if it is not around 2 to 4 weeks from now it will sit in that status for some time.

For context for those waiting for their build, my car was borne today, but is still in QC (got there early afternoon). So 11 days after I got VIN.
