To add to that, a physical shifter can be a thing of beauty when done right. The Swarovski crystal shifter with the illumined "X" inside added to the aesthetic and luxury feel of the cabin.

Some lame button or switch to change gears does not offer the same tactile experience, feedback, or design.
This. Also, I sometimes rest my hand on the gear selector when I'm driving about. Flicking a little switch would feel gimmicky IMO

No it's not engineer test vehicle but the industry trend is going all digital screens due cost cutting and easy to manufacture, this design will be on BMW upcoming EV. Soon no more signals and wiper stalks and you getting a yoke for steering wheel.
Analog and mechanical parts are cost more and difficult to produce if the sensors are bad it's much cheaper to replace.

Surprised that the interior got such a big change, but the exterior is practically unchanged.

It doesn’t look very polished, but it could just be a prototype or early production model. For some reason the actual display sizes don’t match, which makes it look funny or kind of cheap. It could be that any actual production model will look better, more polished and more symmetrical.

I just hope the instrument cluster looks more traditional and is more configurable. Any change from the current setup would represent a gigantic improvement over the weird non-configurable backwards speedo and tach.

I personally like a lot of really large screens. Granted, I like real buttons for common functions, but having a lot of screens is fine by me.

We had all that even just a half decade ago. Crazy to think that all the above will be relics of the past within a few years.

This is all just change for the sake of change at the end of the day. Once one company does it (Tesla) then everybody else followed suit at the risk of falling "behind." Mobile phones changed radically at the end of the 00s, and automobiles are next.

I will seriously never buy another BMW if they do with this design choice.

Mercedes or Porsche will 100% dominate.

Have you seen the new S class exterior and interior? They look so good and they went away from those double screens to a more tesla like interior with a huge center screen and a digital cluster.

usually what they do to the S class trickles down to the CLS, then the C class, then E class and finally A/CLA.

The GLE 53 amg may be a bit slower than the X5 M50i, but its got the BMW by the balls with sound and interior if it gets the new S class interior.

This particular prototype appears to be testing the new iDrive system only and no exterior changes are yet in place.

One of the things that basically every modern BMW still has going for it in my opinion are the ergonomic nature of the controls & the environment as a whole. Crazy that everyone used to play catch up with BMW, now they're copying Mercedes for their interiors & Audi/Alfa/Lexus for the exterior...

Looks like shit, just like the MB double screen looks like. MB is going away from this design after a relatively short run. It doesn't fit in whatsoever with the interior.

The iX and whatever this POS thing is looks like they designed the dashboard and were like crap we forgot the iDrive and instrument cluster. So, they went to BestBuy and just bought a wide curved monitor and put it on there.

And why does their testing vehicle have B&O speakers?

The biggest disappointment is BMW doing away with the gear shifter. I hope this doesn't make its way across all BMW models. The only BMW I'm looking forward to now is a manual G87 M2, hope manual trans is still offered at launch

So you're not gonna buy the new G87 Stick because of this ⁉️

Interesting ‼️

Given the screen configuration, and the notch in the top where the driver sensors go, I'd think these are just screens to test new features. If you look closely, you can see the binnacle above the gauges cluster still exists. So I'd easily believe that it is testing for the i4 in a similarly sized vehicle.

Now, there is no doubt that the next generation of cars all around are going towards larger and more screens.

I've been driving BMW for the last 7 cars I've had and just sold my F36 (already miss it)

Currently have a loaner Merc CLA with AMG Plus package - it's fully loaded and also boasts this dual screen system.

While I can see it can give big screen real estate compared to the current G20, it just doesn't look nearly as integrated as the BMW solution.

Also I really don't get that Matt from CarWow now says this system is more intuitive than the BMW - it's not!

What's wrong with the gear shifter, it's innocent, not seeing any reason why remove it, it's still a ICE car, transmission is still there, current BMW shift gears are pretty good.

My take : these are development units of the hardware, and come launch the screens will look the same as now, but with the newer hardware inside.
Same happens with the PlayStation dev kits
