Question regarding idrive7

My wife was driving our X5 yesterday and I think I have every option available on the car. She was driving and on the display screen there was a warning about a radar trap up ahead. Sure enough, about 10-15 seconds later at 70mph, my wife saw two CHiPies on the side of the road. My question is does and can the car identify radar used by the fuzz? Has anyone else had this experience? Thanks for the replies

Not that I'm aware of. It was probably from an App on her phone - either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The vehicle does have a cellular connection, so depending on what program(s) were running, this could (and did!) happen. The vehicle is one big computer, so lots of things can be done. One thing it also can do is warn you of road construction and other things. It's only as good as the network feeding it, so coverage can be spotty.

Do you happen to have waze installed on your phone?

CarPlay continues to work in the background.

I don't believe she does. But I'll check when I get home from work. It might be Apple Maps that sent the notification because I know she uses Apple car play

BMW has a Traffic Camera app that will show Radar locations similar to Waze. It isn't as accurate as Waze, but can be very useful still.

Regardless, it would be coming from an app. Your X5 doesn’t have factory sensors that detect police radar and warn you automatically.

Yes it works pretty well in the uk. Here the police have to publish the location and date of mobile speed traps and these are relayed to the car via the speed camera app. I has the speed camera app for a couple of months before an image of a speed gun rather than speed camera icon popped up in the HUD and shure enough there was a camera van on the next bridge.

You were 100% right. I looked at the app and that is exactly what happened. That's pretty remarkable. The car knows when it's being monitored for speed by a radar. The technology in this X5 is beyond what I had expected. That's why his is my 3rd BMW

Not according to the app. It shows that it can detect radar and most CHP units are equipped with radar

In the UK you have to pay for the app and then it is sent to your car, do you get it automatically in the US, if not it will have to be installed in the car and shows under apps.

This is not how it works. There is no radar detection in the vehicle, it pulls data from a database and matches it with your GPS location.

Sounds good, but the reality is it doesn't work as they advertise.

Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong

That shows what information is being shown not where the data is coming from. Look down below and you will see some mention of the data source.
