Navigation Map Update
I noticed yesterday that when checking for map version, it now states:
New Initialization Required I checked online (see attached photo) at connected drive like it states, but there isn't anything new there. I also held in the volume button for over a minute to perform a reset, but nothing changed. Since my car has an old regional map update from 2020-4, I was hoping there was finally an update. Anyone else see this message? Just an update. My car first received the regional 2021-2 update last week and today it received 2021-3. Now I just wish it would update the OTA iDrive 11/2020 software. not surprised that you'll have to buy updates. Starting with NBT idrive, you had to pay for BMW assist features including traffic information.

I too saw this message now after 11-2021 iDrive 7 lite update at dealer on X3 M40i. Would be good to get more information from BMW on why the change, as I don't see this on my 2020 M550 that had it's maps recently updated at dealer with 7-2021 software update.

Yes. I got the same message thrown-up on my map 'Update' screen right after the ConnectedDrive (CD) folks had to delete and re-create my CD account that I'd had for several years, as no one could get my address updated. (Never a clear explanation of the problem, but they completely deleted my CD account, which deleted my Profile and I had to re-create all of my vehicle settings! )
I figured it was a re-initiation and I tried numerous things to make it go away, including changing my Region in ConnectedDrive, then changing it back to my home region over a few days time, etc. Nothing changed it. Similar to what you were mentioning, I wanted my nationwide map updated and my dealer was able to do that via a warranty issue and my dealer updated my map for North America to 2021-3. With that update and their fiddling, the "New Initialization Required..." message went away. Time will tell as to whether or not I'll get the incremental map updates...

I had to download the update (almost 30 gigabytes here) using a windows downloader, put it on a USB stick and install the update from there. I'll do it again soon.
Some OTA updates.... |

It appears he lives in Europe…numerous markets outside of the US can download map updates via their ConnectedDrive account, push them to a USB and then update in the vehicle. However, that's not something available to us in the States…

I updated both of my previous BMWs by downloading the software...I prefer to update the entire base map along with all of the available regions. I did a trip outside of my region in August...was there for about a week, but it did not update that zone. Now, I did not change my default region, but expected, after being outside for a while, it would decide to update that to ensure I had the latest information. Imagine a cross-country trip that might hit all of the regions...it may never update as you drive through. Much prefer to have it there.
I haven't tried contacting one of the aftermarket mapping suppliers, but I'd rather not pay for something I 'should' be getting as part of the purchase. Anyone tried to find the applicable files for a US vehicle to do this? |

Yes, I know you can trick the system to give you other regions, but I'd still like the option to update the whole thing on my time. You'd also think that it would be smart enough to recognize you're outside of your 'home' region, and after a bit, update that without you having to do anything. It doesn't help if you're trying to find an address just over the 'line' into a new region as you don't get an immediate update...it takes time.
