Question Help with X5 M50i order: Wheels and Supspension

Hello BMW people!

I just ordered my 2022 X5 M50i. I initially ordered the 20" M Star-spoke bi-color wheels, All-season run-flat. I didn’t upgrade the suspension and I’m unsure of what the default suspension is. I’m regretting not doing more research on wheel and suspension selections beforehand. My dilemma: I love the look of the 22” wheels but am concerned with how they’ll hold up in Colorado. These would be my summer tires but I do drive on unpaved mountain roads a few times a month. My winter wheels/tires would need to be able to handle

My options:
- 22” M Double-spoke black wheels, performance NRF tires + winter tires
- 22” performance tires + 20” w/ all season (current) or 21” w/ winter tires
- 21” M Y-spoke bi-color wheels, Performance RF + winter tires
- 20” all season (current)

I am also looking for recommendations on suspension. Not too many potholes where I live but need to handle unpaved roads a few times a month. I do like to push my current X3 around corners. The only car I was able to test drive was the 45e with Air Suspension.

Attaching my order sheet in case you have any other suggestions.

Please a girl out!

Before any of this, get quotes from the bmw service center to replace the tires. After a good chuckle get a quote from anywhere else.

Is air suspension back for the M50i? I got the 22's on my 21 MY with DHP (so no air) and the ride is great. My winter set up will be 20 inch rims (square) with Nokians.

Get the DHP or younwill end up regretting it. IAS itself is a blessing. You go to unpaved roads. If you have 21 and 22 better have Tire and wheelminsurance. Pretty steep $$ to pay for the looks. I like 20's as you have better selection and you can replace your tires with better performing tires. Not to mention much more affordable.

Very nice build!! Congrats! IMO the 22s really tie everything in. The 20s are nice and you can drive more worry free but they don't compare to the 22s in looks and performance. Tires are more expensive so be prepared for that!

Air suspension is not available for 40i unless you opt for 3rd row seating and it's gone for M50i.

Standard is 2VF Adaptive M suspension or ZDH Dynamic Handing Package which includes:

- 2VW Adaptive M Pro
- ZX5 Active Roll Stabilization
- 2VH Integral Active Steering (4-wheel steering)

2VF Adaptive M suspension is standard on the M50i

From understanding your driving style, I'd recommend upgrading to ZDH Dynamic Handling Package which includes:

- 2VW Adaptive M Pro suspension (dynamic damper control tuned to the M50i)
- ZX5 Active Roll Stabilization which will reduce body roll
- 2VH Integral Active Steering which is 4-wheel steering where the rear wheels can turn up to 2.5 degrees in either direction opposite the front wheels to assist in low speed maneuverability by reducing the vehicle's turning radius by up to 1m and during high driving, with in parallel with front wheels to increase stability and reduced resistance in changing lanes

My technical write up on IAS:

My very detailed coverage of ARS - even though it's written for X7, the basics are identical:

You checked every single option box except for the most important one... DHP.

I would recommend going with the 20" all season for your winter driving (may need to buy a set of snow tires, but 20" will be cheaper than 22".) I would then upgrade to 22" rims for the summer with the tires of your choice. That's exactly what I'm doing with my order as I'm up in Alaska.

I ordered my X5 M50i (with 22 inch wheels) back in April. I had never test driven an X5 with the Dynamic Handling Package, but this forum wouldn't shut up about how amazing it was.. so I took a risk and added it to my build.

My fat pig of an SUV drives like the freakin' Batmobile, and I couldn't be happier. This thing eats corners for breakfast. Also drives comfortably over bumpy surfaces. You should get the DHP with 22 inch wheels and thank me later.

I also have the 22" black 742's. I live in wisconsin so I need something for winter. I just grabbed a set
Of 20" wheels and blizzak snow tires. Mounted balanced and shipped was a hair over $3000. These are the wheels…

Garage List
2023 BMW S1000RR  [0.50]
2022 BMW F900XR  [3.00]
2022 BMW X6 40i  [0.50]

The larger the rim the less choices for all-season and winter tires.

20" set for winter
22" or 21" staggered for summer

Thank you all so much for the suggestions!

I just got it in and am so happy I added the DHP. The drive is incredibly smooth and responsive!

I am now looking for a pair of winter sets. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Suggestions so far:
20" Damonwheels and blizzak snow tires
20 inch rims (square) with Nokians.
