Wondering if any 45e driver has had their rear end snap out in high g corner or the wet?

More importantly, does the 45e fart when shifting? I know the 40i does and it is satisfying, with the M exhaust anyways.

Not with my 45e but I did with my 40e. Accelerating after a red ligt in a corner on a completely dry road. The rear broke out like in a drift but it regained control by it self.

I think you can feel the extra weight if you do a slalom type of maneuver, going back and forth quickly. And in hybrid mode, the suspension is definitely softer since it has air (compared to a fixed suspension setup or M adaptive). Those two things would make a difference if you drove both one right after the other. Now....in sport mode, with firmer suspension, the 45e would be much closer in the handling department. In my driving, which is NOT aggressive, on ramps at 25mph above the posted speed limit, there is no body lean at all. And evasive maneuvering is spot on. I do not expect it to handle like a sports sedan, but I do pay attention to how it drives...isn't that why we ALL buy/lease one of these? So for me, where most of the time I want quiet and luxury, handling above what it already does is not needed. If you really want aggressive driving dynamics in an X5....M50i or M is where you need to go.

Actually, the newer 40is (and even the X3/4 M40is) don't do this any longer. There is a lot of coding research being done to open the exhaust flap.

There is the manufactured "woooooooo" sound on the 45e, though, which is kind of space-age sounding and a different kind of cool.

I guess I won't experience that anytime soon.

The center of gravity is lower of that weight so the car should hold the road better. The new M cars for instance are much heavier than the older ones and yet handle better. As you say, all things equal, heavier is worse, but here all things are not equal. The hybrid engine, lower center of gravity and different tuning of suspension because of the air suspension etc.

Agreed, as I mentioned in my post, BMW are the masters at hiding weight and making the cars handle well despite any weight disadvantage. I've personally never driven a 45e but I am confident that BMW engineered it to handle very well compared to the non hybrid versions of the G05 chassis.

I'm not so sure about that. I've driven both vehicles and the 40i feels a tad lighter and the electric motors are just another thing that could go wrong.

The two configurations are very close in power to weight ratios, so ultimate acceleration differences are probably more the result of production variances, the track, and the day.

The much greater torque with the 45e from standstill is noticeable, but the turbo engine is designed to develop boost at quite low rpms compared to older designs, which helps...but, max torque with an electric motor from zero rpm fills in the start nicely.

Both had/have air suspension.

Handling is identical between the two. The only time I really notice the 600lbs of chunk in the 45e is when going over a speed bump (or regular road imperfection for that matter); it drops down a little harder and faster.
I just got a e45 w 20" wheels and finding that the ride quality is not as smooth as I had expected. Every car magazine praises the new X5 platform for being super comfortable - more comfortable than the Cayenne w Air Suspension which is what I had before.

Did you find the ride quality in the 40i significantly smoother than in the e45 on broken roads? I'm finding the ride in the e45 much busier than on the Cayenne (just air suspension, no PDCC).

I have 22" tires which are non run-flats, and until they find the space to put a spare tire in the 45e, I'll be sticking to my 40i.

While the dealers are supposed to check and adjust the tire air pressure prior to delivery, they don't always, so I'd check that first.

Sorry to hear that.

Both of my X5s had air suspension; I find the 45e to definitely be smoother than the 40i. The extra battery weight is noticeable in the ride which reduces the bumps.

Did your Cayenne have RFTs? On my "3rd X5 ago," I had the 21" staggered wheels with the M-Sport. Since we get winter around here, I replaced the summer tires with non-RFTs (because it was the only all-season option), and that improved the ride considerably.

Perhaps it's not the suspension that's bugging you so much as the tires?

(I have a love/hate relationship with RFTs myself, but in the end they are more convenient.)
