Touchscreen is back
I think this worths a new thread.
Just checked a X5 40i produced on 11/17, and it has the touchscreen. So it's just two weeks of productions without a touchscreen. I have to say, BMW, make it right for all the customers affected by the deletion. FYI, I have been refreshing my Track status page all day and nada. Then I saw this post and remembered the API calls are on the My Vehicle page, refreshed, boom, update. Seems some things are caching and I had to log out and in to get pages to update.

The web site is calling functions (API - Application Programming Interface) to query the build system. I haven't dug into it but it appears the calls are made on the My Vehicle page and Track My BMW displays the previously returned information. But I did see some weird caching that only refreshed after logging out and in.

The question here is:
Will the dealer/SA be honest with affecred customers about the "touchscreen is back" info? If so, I believe most of the customers will just cancel their custom build orders. Then, dealers will have rows of touchless vehicles on their lot. so the next question is: Will dealer be honest with potential buyers about the issue "only a small window vehicles are with out touchscreen"? This is bothering me. My allocation got pulled ahead 4 weeks and because of that I will not have a touchscreen. I don't really use touchscreen in my current 530e, but that's besides the point. They need to retrofit the vehicles impacted.
Also, does anyone know if backup assistant is still removed? |

Backup assistant deletion is coupled with touchscreen deletion if you opted for the Parking Assist Package.

I honestly feel like a spoiled brat throwing a micro tantrum over this, but if I'm spending 80k on a car it shouldn't have a sort of "defect" to it. This takes away from the experience of owning a BMW and can potentially effect the resale value. It's not like this issues lasted for months, which I would have been more accepting of. This was short term and impacts a small pool of people.

My X5 finished production on 11/18. Though I haven't received the car yet, I can confirm that when I enter my VIN into mdecoder.com and it shows me what's on the car, there's no reference to the touchscreen or backup assistant being deleted. I've been tracking it daily on BMW's site just waiting for it (6UY) to appear but it never did.
For what it's worth, I ordered an M50i with literally every single option. In the end, the only things deleted (sans soft close doors, wireless charging, and the other features that used to be standard) was the B&W stereo and the hitch. The real kick in the pants is that I ordered the car back in August and it kept getting delayed because, of all things, the hitch. My salesperson told me back then that removing the hitch would cause it to go into production almost immediately, but I chose to wait on the hitch. Now, I've still lost the hitch but also the B&W stereo and delayed getting the vehicle by a couple of months. I know it's not really important in the grand scheme of things, but I do regret waiting and losing the stereo as well. You win some and you loose some. What are you going to do? I got a good discount on the car (8% in Aug - can't get it now + BMW CCA discount + (hopefully) PenFed discount) and should do well on my trade-in so I can't really complain in this market. |
