If touchscreen is fully back in current production, I can't understand why BMW would build Priority 1 orders knowing people went out of their way to order a specific configuration. BMW routinely pushes back build dates, especially since Covid, so if they knew touchscreen delete would only be a few weeks, why not push all Priority 1 orders to after the touchscreens are back in production? I'd like to think they had enough unsold dealer orders that could have carried them through this "window".

Am I missing something? Is it possible the supplier (Visteon) surprised BMW with touchscreens earlier than anticipated? Nah.

Yes it is very likely that BMW was unaware if, when and the quantity of touch screen iDrive screens they would be receiving. They likely didn’t want to hold the production line for the chance that they *might* get touch screens in two weeks.

I will say that when I bought 24-hour access to BMWTIS, I saw the service bulletin with the stop-sale on it for the touchscreen delete cars, which said that the issue spanned from something like October 17 to the End of November

I did manage to retrofit the touchscreen to my 45e (produced on 11/1 and delivered on 11/13), and will be doing a write-up on how to do it…but I think it’s particularly insulting that BMW would want to just quietly and unceremoniously add the touchscreens back, like nothing happened, and tell those of us without the touchscreen to piss off. In the words of Rasputia Latimore, “That ain’t right!”

It seems pretty certain from what I'm reading that based on codes found on MyGarage and someone's convo with BMWNA that touchscreen is back. Is that the consensus? My build moved from Order Received to Scheduled for Production yesterday 11/19 and trying to set my expectations accordingly. (also was going to send an email but will hold off if not affected).

I spoke with my CA and GM yesterday and they are telling me that touchscreen isn't back and they spoke with BMWNA this week. Every indication is that it wasn't a 2-3 week blip. They are saying the models arriving with touchscreen are due to delayed delivery and those cars were probably built prior to the shortage. But I'm taking this all with a gallon of salt since it felt like they were just trying to rollover me.

I'm leaning towards not taking deliver of my X5 sitting on the lot and telling them to reorder. Unfortunately it was sweet deal and doubt I'll be able to match that offer elsewhere…. 5% off MSRP is hard to come by right now in NJ.

Just came from my local dealer where I was test driving the X5 M50i. My CA said he is 90% sure that touchscreens are not coming back into production. And this was after I told him that I would categorically NOT order my new build if it wasn’t going to have the touchscreen, so he had every incentive to assuage my concern and tell me everything would be ok, go ahead and order.

I think for a $1,000 deposit though, there is no real downside to ordering. If it comes without the touchscreen someone else will buy it, these things are flying off the lot. Was supposed to drive an M50i with DHP this morning and the CA texted me yesterday sorry it’s going into contract right now.

One thing we can probably all agree about though is that BMWNA is doing a poor job of communication with buyers and dealers.

At this point. I believe they have communicated but no one wants to believe and/or they want to figure out the magic set of options that will come w/a touch screen. Latter won't happen.

Auricom said it best...
There's tens thousands of vehicles affected on a monthly basis and unfortunate that individuals can't see beyond their situation - it's not ideal for either company or future owners.

I only believe what I see.
For dealers who claimed that the touchscreen is not back, ask them for a single vin(X5/X7) produced after 11-16 that has touchscreen deletion.

More data I found from a SC dealer stock: (no 06UY as you can see)

For people who have a touchless car to be delivered:
1. read through this post;
2. Do your research (at least check the stock of your dealer and nearby dealers)
3. Make decision accordingly

Again, BMW:
Do it right, put a banner on your website "There is possiblity that your vehicle will be delivered w/o a touchscreen"
Not to put the dealer in the middle and act like this has nothing to do with you.

I cannot believe how much time I have spent on this S*T.
And I know this post will temper some of the enthusiast again. But do I care? People deserve to know the truth.

Guessing the order is accepted (status=111) the vehicle inquiry will show all options including deletes.

I have a status 111 on X6, so far, I don’t have the touchscreen delete and the backup assist delete codes. Do you see the delete codes or deletion of touchscreen under standard options?

How do you get the option breakdown? Is that through the mdecoder.com website?

I tried putting in my VIN but it says it can't find it.

You can't use mdecoder until a day or so after production has been completed. You can get the options from MyGarage using Fetch/XHR in Chrome.

It won't show until after the car is produced (and VINs are assigned at the beginning of production, i.e., BEFORE production)

Ya it's particularly annoying that my car is still in transit w/o a touchscreen and new models are already being produced with them.

Why don't they just ship out ~2k-3k touchscreens and recall those affected? Treat it like the defect it is.

Like, can I refuse the touchscreen credit and demand they just fix it? It's clearly possible to be fixed, and it doesn't seem that bad.

You can't do that but you can refuse delivery. It may be worth doing that and reordering even if you have to use a rental for awhile but hopefully you can get the dealer give you a loaner as compensation for the situation. I would hate to have you think about the touchscreen every time you get into your X5. May cost some extra bucks but the peace of mind may be worth it.
