Thoughts on X5 purchase

Hey Everyone - I've been considering purchasing a new X5 40i M-Sport and have been browsing a lot of the threads on e90. I have a 13 335i Msport sedan, which I love.

Removal of a few features is a bit concerning. Especially the touch screen (I have yet to confirm with local dealers in va) and the wireless charging. I read charging is slow, so maybe it doesn't matter. I even read somewhere that the M-sport doesn't have air suspension anymore. Probably another thing I don't need.

Are there any folks shopping for a 22 X5 thinking to wait till 2023?

Any help would be appreciated And if you have dealership suggestions in the N.VA area, feel free to shoot me their info.

Thanks!

So...I ordered new in July (was planning on used, but that market is too crazy). Ordered a 40i w/M package. Doesn't have air suspension. Has 22" wheels, MSport brake, and basically everything but adaptive cruise control package. Does have touch screen (and I still CANNOT figure out if it has wifi!), does not have a heated or cooled cupholder (doesn't bother me) or wireless charging (doesn't bother me).

I came from a 2012 Audi S4 (sedan) with mods and a manual. This is a new car - with new technology for me (at least the Audi had blue tooth!). It's taken some time - but I LOVE IT. Yes..sometimes I miss the growl of my Audi (with the exhaust mod)...and sometimes I wish I had the M50 (but it was a 15-20k delta (with sales tax). But - this car has a 48v mild hybrid, I've turned off ASS (and done some other things) with Bimmercode...

I love the 22inch wheels. No issues at all with the Continental summer tires (noise/ride quality) (riding 20" winters now)...and driving traditional US crappy roads in Philly.

I WOULDN'T get the car if it did not have touchscreen. BUT - I believe the touchscreen is back.

As far the the touchscreen goes our 21 does have it. I definitely wouldn't say it's slow by any means I find it quite responsive. With that said however I don't find that I really need to use it all that much. The center console control wheels is designed really well and really doesn't give you many reason to need to use touch screen. That's with both CarPlay and standard BMW features.

I seriously shopped for an X5 over the summer. I'm a long time BMW owner. After the removal of some of the options and the lack to interest of dealers to negotiate prices I gave up looking. I'll hold off until 2022 or 2023 and then maybe look again. In the meantime I'm still a BMWCCA member. There is a huge difference between a 335i and X5. I'd say if you are happy with the 335i hold onto it a while longer.

Just received my families '22 x5 m sport 40i. I'm a long time BMW owner and enthusiast. Although my vehicle does not have the touchscreen, the steering wheel controls were always the way i adjusted the radio. The vehicle is amazing and we couldn't be happier. Based on what I've learned, next years cars are going to be missing options as well. The touchscreens aren't back with the chip shortage and supply chain issues.

I forget who it was, but someone here recently took delivery of an x5 and was initially told they wouldn't have the touchscreen, but discovered that it did in fact have it. Doesn't mean it's permanently back, but if it's important to you, there may still be a chance of getting a '22 with the touchscreen.

I ordered a X5 xDrive 40i. With the M sport package. It lists, Adaptive M Suspension in that package along with this,20" M wheel 740M w/ as rft
8-Spd Sport Auto Transmission, Aerodynamic kit, Anthracite headliner, M steering wheel, Roof rails in High-gloss, SensaTec, Dashboard and Shadowline exterior trim. Is that different than the air suspension?

Yes two different things. Some find that the adaptive suspension is a firmer ride. Basically, very generally speaking, adaptive = more "sporty" at the expense of comfort, and air suspension = more comfortable, but won't feel as "sporty." But ultimately it's personal preference. Did you have a chance to test drive to see if you were okay with it?

X5 Seat control panel.

I just ordered a 2022 X5 . I currently have a 2015 model. 50 K miles on it. I have had an ongoing problem with the control panel on the lower left of the drivers seat. After a while it begins to separate from the seat and eventually it breaks off. The controls all still function. I am on my third replacement. The BMW dealer charged $ 300 for the part and labor. Has anyone else had the problem.? The part is held on by plastics pins. Really cheap.

I prefer the MSport adaptive suspension over the air suspension. It provides a decent ride in Comfort mode and a little better handling in Adaptive. When I replace the tires with goflats I expect the ride to get even nicer with little to no decline in handling. I have 20" wheels and would expect the 22s to ride rougher especially with runflats.

As far as lacking a touch screen, I never use mine as I prefer the controller. I hate smudges.

Same here. Ordered July picked up late august with same options. Not one regret.

I agree with you on adaptive suspension, but the 22" wheels only come with non run-flats, there are no run-flats on 22" wheels.

I have the 22" 742 M bicolor wheels, and the ride is softer and more compliant than the 20" 740M run-flats (Bridgestone Alenza's) I came from in my 2019 G05 - it really surprised me. I WAS very apprehensive about getting the 22"s, I was worried about road noise and lots of reviews out there complain about comfort, but now that I've had them for just over 1 month - couldn't be happier. I'll see how they go with wear in the coming year(s), and I know 22"s are more expensive - but they look great, especially with the Red M-sport brakes.

If you can wait I will sugget not to order now.

It's the worst time to purchase a new BMW. If only I have known all these frustration I have to go through, I would not return my leased Mini and wait.

Wait at least for 2 more months, hopefully things will be more stable by then.

Now, nobody knows what you will get and what you will not. Totally a mess.

Absolutely! We’ve had it break twice in our 2016 X 6. We paid $530 to fix it but we traded the car in last week with it broken again. They told us that they all do that. Lol.
It appears that our new X6 seat has been redesigned to avoid that damage.

I met with a sales guy who said chips are being saved for the higher end BMW SUVs and vehicles. (Anyone else here info similar)? I’m looking to order an X5 40i w/M Sport and other options, but I’m waiting till 2022 (only as it’ll be the right time for me).

BMW Of Fairfax Virginia is a great dealership if you’re in the Virginia area.

David of BMW Of Catonsville has been my guy for many lease purchases. He’s always up on all latest BMW info. He also has a build / quote configure link. It returns a quote back pretty quick.

Thank you all! Great Advice and information. The X5's with the red calipers was a surprise, they look pretty cool. Hard to find the ones with the black 22's. Probably not a good idea for the DC area. Crazy pot holes during winter.

Right. I’m also hoping the discounts come back in 2022. Right now MSRP is the best pricing I hear exist

I also found that the 22s ride great. I switched to our winter set (740m with Runflats ) and the first thing my wife said is " why is it so rough ". We both agreed the 22s non run flat ride better than the 20" Runflats.

I checked my test drive history logbook and can second that experience. Was never sure before if that was just a fluke. Keeping in mind that there are many variables involved, in 2019 I test drove back to back a 50i followed by a 40i. The former had 22” non-RFTs, M sport pack with M Adaptive. The latter had M Sport pack with deleted Adaptive in favor of air suspension along with 20” RFTs. Unfortunately I wasn’t smart enough to write down the tire brands & models. In any case, test drive was around Downtown Seattle with plenty of torn up aggregate surfaces on a 60F day. The result? The 22s nrfts were significantly quieter on that day than the 20s rfts. The ride was smoother as well but that may also have to do with differences in weight and chassis. Both had acoustic glass as well so the road noise was clear. For me, I would get the 20” wheels needed for my typical usage and ditch the non-run flats immediately for something like Scorpios Verde 2 non-rfts that were favorably reviewed recently on this forum, unless the rfts today have become quieter since 2019. And make sure to order the bargain $150 spare tire factory option even if you stick with the factory rfts at first. You may be glad later.

PS: one thing I wondered since then is whether or not BMW puts more chassis sound insulation in their V8 models than I6s?… that would somewhat have invalidated the aural test conducted above.

I just ordered a '22 m50i as my lease just ended for my '18 50i.

Not concerned with the touch screen. I had it in my 2 previous BMWs and never used it as I hate the finger prints on the screen. It is much more convenient using the iDrive controller.

Prices are very upsetting and the dealers are acting like a**es by giving you the car at MSRP while jacking up the monthly payments using increasing MF and reduced residuals by BMWFS.

But it is what it is and there is no price reduction visible in the future. FYI, a good client of mine just leased a Lexus with a MSRP of 60K for $1,050 a month with $7K down. The guy has 745 FICO score on top of it. So everybody is on the same boat in terms of deals that suck.
