Hey, I'm about to order an M50i and I'm stuck on these two wheels.

Was looking at the order guide and it says that the:

742m comes with performance tires

But the

747m wheels come with mixed performance tires

Any idea what that means??
Also, what do you guys think looks better, the 742 or 747? My only gripe with the 747 is that the cerium gray kind of always looks like it has brake dust on it. It kind of lacks a "pop" to it, however I love the classic spoke look.

I believe mixed performance means summer's that are staggered

I honestly like the cerium grey, it looks like a brushed brass in some lights
I like the 747's as well. I originally built the m50i with all cerium trim and the 747's.
At the last minute, I switched to full shadowline with the black 742's

Correct, mixed means different sizes front and rear. All 22” options come with the same staggered setup. You will get continental or Pirelli tires most likely.

I love my Cerium rims. They look amazing.

Although I like the fact that the 747 are exclusive to our M50i, I prefer a wheel that is concaved for the majority of the face of the wheel, and is why I prefer the 742. I'm also not a huge fan on the 747 finish. In fact, I went with both silver (for summer) and black (for winter) 742 wheels.

Both that 747 and 742 are staggered, but only the 747 has "Mixed" in the tire description. Why is that? I almost want to say the 747s come with all season tires and the 742 comes with summer - but I know that's not the case.

As others have chimed in, BMW uses the phrase mixed performance tires for high performance summer staggered front and rear tire sizes. BMW has only offered all season tires in a square (same size front and rear) setup.

As far as selecting between the two wheel options:

1. 747 are unique to M50i, the cerium finish looks nice when clean but it's a lot of work to maintain - I have similar wheel finish on my M550i but ceramic coated to make it easier to clean.

2. 742 are fairly common in my area - they're nice but not my a/ - I do like the distinctive design.

This is interesting, as I had the same question as the OP. In looking at local dealers and online (e.g. cars.com), I see the 742 and 747 with the same tires installed but they can be either the Pirelli P-zeros ("Max Performance Summer" and as shown in your pics above), or the Continental PremiumContact 6 model, which Tirerack lists as a "Grand Touring Summer" tire. The tread design of the latter appears a little more all-season.

It's a misprint in the ordering/pricing guides...BMW just left out the word "mixed" when referring to the 742Ms. Another mistake noted was referring to the rear 21" 741Ms as 10.0" wide, when they are really 10.5" BMW uses various tire manufacturers throughout the production life, but these are both summer rubber.

Make sure you know what your options are for the winter if you are planning to go with summer performance tires.

All Black 742M on pirelli summer tires, if mine was an M50i, I would still prefer these over the 747. Also a side note, the continental tires have a very different shape to the sidewall vs the pirelli's.

747m looks much better in person vs 742m imo.

Between those 2, I prefer the 742.

I ordered the 747m on my M50i. Scheduled for week 9 production next month.
I prefer the 747 over the 742 for several reasons. First they are exclusive to the M50i- won't be seen on any other X5. Second I'm not a fan of the black inserts on the 742, just like the 747 style better. I also think the open design of the 747 gives a better view of the M sport calipers.

I haven't even seen an M50i on the road at all, yours will be unique with that wheel. When did you place your order?

Very nice, the blue on ivory looks great!
Interesting, my order date was just a week ago, my dealership must have had an allocation they were able to tweak for me because I'm showing week 8 for production start.

Yup, it's all about what a dealer has for allocations. What's your build?

I personally didn't care much for the look or color of the 747 wheel but between the 742 bi color and all black I still go back and forth every day (mineral white). Gut tells me stick with original plan of silver/black.

747 does show off the blue calipers best tho.

Very nice! Loaded. I notice in Canada BMW is still giving 4 years scheduled maintenance, where they dropped to 3 years in the USA several years ago - Interesting.
