You need crossbar first, OEM is of very good value and quality, it seems to be made by Thule with lock and t-bar slot compatible with Thule.
I personally prefer a ski box which protects the car and the ski better and has less impact on aerodynamic (noise, mpg) and more flexible. BMW, Thule and Yakima all make good ones. One drawback is it might not fit into some very old garage as it is quite tall. If you want ski clamp, I would recommend thule snowpack EXTENDER. The extender version allow you to slide the rack off to the side of the vehicle, making loading and unloading much easier. Another alternative is hitch mount, if you have tow hitch. Yakima makes one that covers a bike rack to a hitch mount ski rack |

I have OEM and Thule Winbar EVO (one end sticking out), for about 9 months now. Here is my conclusion
They both function. OEM is functional first, nothing else is considered. It is brush Al. It kind of look out of place in a dark color car especially with shadow trims. The bars are thicker by a big margin, they are also sit higher, too high than what it needs to be IMO. Maybe due to these, the bars does create a small but noticeably whistle noise. It functions and it is inexpensive. You can easily find them for $150-200 in FB market place or Craigslist. Just make sure don't pay $300 for them Thule is what OEM is plus the aesthetically. Bars re smaller and sit lower, black look great, definitely quieter. The black anodize does get scratch after some use on top. It is 3x the cost. If money is not a concern, I will take Thule. In my case, I cannot justified the 3x cost myself, I kept the OEM. I only have them on when I need them. Rest of the time, they are stored inside the roof box garage. If I have the Thule, I would probably keep them on all the time, it looks more "in place".

Super easy, maybe 15 minutes to put them on. About 13 out of those 15 min are for positioning of the bar.

Cool. Thanks. For some reason when I was doing the build, ski racks weren’t an option. I do want something more quiet as it will be a longer trip when I have the skis.

I also don't like the look for OEM, I have black car - do you think I can spray paint them black myself? Any concern I may need to consider? |

For the quiet aspect, I think it only make a difference if you have nothing attach, like most of the time of us. Once you put a roof box on (my case), or ski clamps + ski, noise will be dominated by those items.

The G05 bars will fit a few different BMWs.
Noise will somewhat depend on where you place them. While it's a bit tricky to find the first time, the G05 has a slight bump molded into the rubber strip on the inside of the rails to aid you in placing the bars at their optimum position. Otherwise, you'd use a tape measure after consulting the instructions. |
