It is insurance and that is all, so most people have to spend more for the coverage than the cost of repairs for it to work out - wheel is 600-800 bucks tire, 300 ish (maybe a bit more with the 22's) so you have to destroy 2 wheels and tires to even break even and if you don't totally destroy them, you can fix any bent wheels and refinish for a few hundred (which is what they will do, they won't replace unless destroyed). Personally I think it is a waste of money unless you are going through 1 or 2 wheels and tires wher you live every year. Now if you paid 1000 like Charles549 might be worth the money just in case but 2k or 3k is hard to get your money out of.
The issue we experience southwest Florida is the constant residential construction going on with nails and screws falling off work trucks.

If you are careful with wheels, I would recommend getting protection from Discount Tire. No wheel coverage. I bought tire coverage for tires I didn't even buy from them. It is usually around $70 per tire, and covers it until it is less than 2/32 tread. If you get a nail, they replace it. If tires are worn off and you replace them, you need to buy the protection AGAIN. The RFTs usually need a replacement once during a 30k lease, and it ends up being $560 ish. The only inconvenience is, you give up wheel protection, and the luxury of getting a loaner from the dealership while it is in service. However, Discount Tire guys said they can install a temporary tire if the one I need isn't in stock and keep driving the car. Not sure if universal rule.

I have never purchased tire/wheel protection before but since I am leasing for the first time I didn't want to deal with potential charges at lease turn in so I bought a package that provides full protection for the wheels(including cosmetics), tires until they have less than 2/32 tread depth, body dings, and windshield chips, stars, etc. I paid $2147 and added it to the cap cost of the lease. Coverage is 3 years/36K miles.
