Tried rear cross traffic alert at the dealer yesterday. The CA was behind the wheel, and we could not make it work. it was enabled in the menu, but when backing into the busy street, no visual or audio alerts. The dealer promised to research and get back to me, but I'm not holding my breath.

I experienced the pedestrian collision warning for the first time this morning with a bicycle - I was driving up a steep incline on a bridge, which leads me to think that the metal license plate is blocking the radar.

I got this today. I was pulling out of a crowded parking lot when a car raced in on my left blind spot.

I may not have been in real danger, but if pleased this warned me to make certain things did not go badly for all of us.

I got it today for the first time. I was driving on a two lane road where the left lane was stationary. Someone had pulled into the left lane from a side road and were essentially sideways in the lane - the car put up a massive red sideways car warning me of that vehicle.

The front/Rear Cross-Traffic / Pedestrian Alert in my 2018 540i is of no value whatsoever. It’s lack of vigilance is laughable. Putting any trust in it invites disaster. It was a waste of $3,400 and a badly broken promise. BMW has failed on multiple occasions to address it and has now flagged my vehicle as ineligible for repairs related to this feature. BMW Norht America stubbornly states that my vehicle is operating as designed. When confronted with their own demonstration video, the they told me that all vehicles will not necessarily perform similarly ! I wish that this BMW technology worked as well as the like-kind feature in the Genesis that I traded in. It was highly effective! I wish too that BMW’s treatment of me and this issue had not sucked so much joy out of my ownership experience. BMW’s arrogance is remarkable.

Tried it on my friends 2019 X5. I walked behind the car while it was in reverse, as it would happen in the parking lot, the car did not give any warnings both when moving and stationary while in reverse. Called BMW genius and he said it's not designed to detect pedestrians. Totally confused now how to test it and see if it works

You will find it works in a car park.

Start backing / pulling out when you know someone is driving along the row and it will alert. If you are stationary the system does not alarm.

Here you go....

"Person Warning" only works for pedestrians and cyclists above 5km/h or 3mph when travelling forwards.

Thanks for posting. It sounds like it does pedestrian detection for front, but not for rear when you are backing up

I took the car into service today and had the dealer check on the cross traffic when I was getting the latest software.

They left a note saying cross traffic was working as intended.

It will only work if the Front or Rear camera is activated on Full screen.

Haven't had the chance to try this out yet to confirm

I didn't realize until I read this that the camera needs to be activated for the cross traffic to work. This explains why I thought mine wasn't working. The technology is not as advanced as I thought. My 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is far more technically advanced than this and about $20k cheaper.

2019 July build does not work at all. I've already had several near misses that wouldn't have occurred in even my 2015 GC or 2017 Acadia. Checked settings, etc. Obviously will have to take it in.

This doesn't seem right that it will only work with camera... My Wife's X3 does not have the cameras and works just fine. I had mine go off before while backing out and the camera prompted with the alert. The rear was already out past the car next to me on the right where the other was coming from. I would say if possible get some peeps together go to a quiet parking lot and test around a bit. I trust that it works bc I had it work, but do understand a POV if it hasn't worked yet.

Mine's working just fine, in reverse at least. I've never gotten a frontal alert but haven't been in a situation where I'd have needed to either.

I've discovered it won't alarm unless you are moving.
