Dash pad coming undone.

Reposting this here because I think I accidentally posted in the wrong forum:

My 2020 X5 M50i is having the leather lift off the dash where the dash meets the front windshield. Talked to a local upholstery shop and they said it can’t really be repaired. Needs a replacement. Called my dealer and they want an eye watering 5k for the part and that doesn’t include labor. Car is out of warranty.

Anyone have some creative ideas? I was even thinking of getting some black flex tape and putting it over the area. I don’t want it to look too horrible but I want it to stop from coming apart more.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance

I wish I could help, that's quite awful on a luxo car. When you approached the dealer, how far out of warranty was your car? I'm thinking that if you are not far out of warranty and since, I think, that issue is very uncommon, you could make a plea to BMW NA to fix it. Not just an ordinary plea but a monster plea, I mean that is just not a normal issue. Maybe they pay the whole price or half the price or possibly agree on a good trade in deal....dunno till you try. I'd certainly be making a lot of noise about it. Its a 2020, you can't be far out of warranty when you first reported it.
IMHO, anything you do to try and fix it yourself or cover it up will look bad. It needs a dash replacement which is a huge job, hence the high price.

Interesting. Is there a way for me to contact bmw na about this or do I go through the dealer? Thanks!

There sure is, they LOVE to be contacted I would appeal to your dealer again and push them a bit but be nice doing it, trying to get their understanding and sympathy. If that doesn't work, then.. ..

Garage List
I'm not a professional upholsterer, though I have done some minor stuff. To me, that looks like the cover was too small, and has shrunk, peeling pack from the edges and splitting that seam.

Tends to happen on all cars with a leather dash. I would try another upholstery shop. I’d imagine someone could at the minimum fashion a patch repair that wouldn’t look totally awful. I doubt the dealer or BMW will help you…to them it’s probably my wear and tear. Shameful it happened so early.

If you do get it replaced I would recommend tinting your windshield and using a sunshade. It’s usually heat and sun damage that causes these things to shrink.

Best of luck!

Does anyone know what material is used on the dash of the X5?
  • Is it leather or some leatherette?
  • Is there any difference if you get leather interior versus Sensafin?

The standard dash is SensaTec, perhaps they changed to Sensafin and I didn't catch it.

You need to order the leather dashboard to get the Nappa leather on it.

Old-school carpeted dash cover? Only kind of joking.

Curious, is the car normally parked outdoors or garaged?
Concerned with this shrinking and warranty or not, this is clearly a defect that BMW should take care of as it points to failure of a component in my opinion.

If BMW doesn't step up, and if this was my car, I would look for covering it with some sort of color matched leather tape so this does not spread and is mostly concealed.

Why stop at the dash? The throw in a free rake when you do the whole interior.

Orange fur it is!!!! Love it.

I reached out to BMW…The warranty ended in January. I’ll see what they say. I don’t have high hopes.

Thanks for all the input!

January was just a week ago, I'd stay on the issue with BMW because the fix is so pricey and it's obvious to me that it's not an owner caused issue....unless you or someone was in that area trying to do something you shouldn't of.

Sorry I’m losing my mind. It ended at the end of December. Still. Just a couple of weeks ago. I hope they work with us! I’ll post any updates.

I guess I have to ask as everyone is likely wondering, why didn't you take it into the dealer prior to the warranty expiring?

A little embarrassing. I didn’t even notice! You can’t see it from inside. And my wife’s car was in the shop and was driving my car last week and pointed in out to me. D’oh!

Oh well, things happen. The good thing is if you didn't notice maybe some type of patching won't be noticeable either.
