New Car Quality Hits Speed Bump

Looks like we are not alone in experiencing a multitude of failures with the high tech areas of the X5.

This is not surprising. As cars add more tech there is bound to be a greater number of problems. My biggest concern is dealing with the safety side of things, I see several accidents every day here, at least 1-2 fatalities per week.

But still not great to see BMW ranked lower than the likes of Kia & Ford

agree that more tech = more problems for cars, but dont think you seeing accident has anything to do with quality of card today. bad drivers/driving are probably 99% of these accidents. no one can blame new tech. if everyone were responsible drivers, we wont have that many accidents

absolutely no concern on safety of today's cars, just the drivers.

Probably can blame the ever-increasing sources of distracted driving via smart phone apps. So new tech yes, just not car tech.

nope, i put my phone down and focus on driving, so no distraction. every driver makes their own decision to drive with or without distraction. because of a new tech, doesnt give any driver to not be responsible.

I leave mine alone, but not a day goes by that I don’t see others on the road messing with theirs.

Self driving cars is a total different conversation, plus they are probably less than 1% of cars out there. plus isnt there disclaimer saying drivers are still in control and is responsible.

you can't just hit someone or something and say the car's tech didnt do its job??

who's fault is that? the user or the manufacture of the phone if there was an accident?

The user of course. The point being that the tech has created additional temptations for irresponsible people to behave irresponsibly. Oh well, the genie is out of the bottle.

I was stating that with increased issues, accidents are more likely. Drivers tend to take comfort in systems rather than their own skills. I see it every single day. This has been proven in studies where drivers become complacent with more aides when those aides don't work, or have issues drivers aren't always equipped to respond. When the aides work, they're great by all accounts.

I try to never use my phone in the car. Siri works pretty well for requesting playlists. I think I’ve gotten one call in the car so far. That worked fine, but haven’t had any texts yet.

When people call, if I answer, I tell them I’m driving - whaddya want?

I’ll get my daughter to help me test texting in the car when she is home for a few days next week.

I agree. I think time will tell if all of these functions make cars safer, or just causes drivers to be mire careless.

Generally speaking, tho, cars are leaps and bounds safer than they were 20 or 30 years ago. But due mostly to airbags, frame designs, and interior finishes.

It will be interesting to see the results if someday NHTSA does some sort of study on whether cars with self-driving tech are safer or not.
