Hi everyone, I've been shopping around for a used X5 M50i and have found two that look to be good options. Both are 21's, same color, similar packages (exec, parking, etc), similar mileage (around 10-11k) and price is pretty close. Car A has one owner, no DAP and is $1k more. Car B has two owners, has DAP and is $1k less. I don't necessarily need DAP but seems nice to have. My concern with Car B is that while both are previous lease vehicles, Car B already has a second owner and sold it after only a few thousand miles. While there could be many reasons for this, and I'll be asking for service records to check, but I'm concerned it could because there are issues with the vehicle. Also, would me being the 3rd owner affect resale value much when I decide to sell a few yrs down the line?

Is there anything specific I should be on the lookout for when looking/test driving the cars? I've test driven a few already and they all didn't have any noticeable issues.

Obviously the multiple owner vehicle inherently has many more risks but as long as the service records look good to you, it should be all good.

If private sale, pay for the vehicle to get checked out by a trusted mechanic.

And no, your being a 3rd owner shouldn't impact resell value too much.

Get both Vin #'s and run them by your BMW service advisor. He'll let you know what if any issues there have been.

Also - DAP is so good I won’t buy another one without it. I owned my first X5 for seven months - I wasn’t sure it would work for me and bought the cheapest one I could with just Convenience package and leather. The second one was two years newer, came loaded with Exec, Parking, massaging, ventilated, heated fancy seats and DAP - the goal is to drive that one until early 2030 at least….

In your heart you will always wonder why someone sold it twice. And once after only a few thousand miles. Rattle? Smell? Another gremlin? I would stay away from being the third owner for a car so new.

I think you'll be fine whether you are the 2nd or 3rd owner. Just as someone else mentioned, make sure there aren't any obvious issues before you buy and consider the extended warranty in case something does happen. I bought (ordered) mine brand new last Aug and it already has a new gas tank, Telemetrics control unit and some other control unit that controls fuel level indications. Maybe the 2 owner x5 hasn't had any issues, you just don't know.

Paying more to get a less desirable vehicle because it’s had one fewer owners seems silly to me. Without any other evidence, “two owners” is a minor data point that doesn’t really indicate much of anything.
