45e and 50e owners - what are charging with at home?
planning on ordering a 50e. Unfortunately I have detached garage which is part of a shared garage bay for several townhouse homeowners and we all are fed by a a shared 110v circuit box (which each have our own 20 amp circuit).
I am looking for… A) 110v charger (plug in or wall mounted) that will maximize the charge times from a 20 amp circuit B) ideally a charger that has some metering & scheduling capability so I can record how much electricity Im using for charging and ensure I am mostly charging after 9pm when rates are lower. |

A dedicated 20A service can support up to 16A. Now, one thing to check out is if there is 240vac at the subpanel. If there is, and there's any space in the box, you could replace your 120vac circuit breaker with a double-pole one and use the 12/2 wires to a new 240vac receptacle, doubling your power available (power=volts*amps, so if you can double the volts, you double the power available).
If you can't, most any 16A, level 1 box can work. One I have, can work as both a level 1 or a level 2 device, depending on what it is plugged into...it's cheaper than buying the cord to make your FFS a level 2 device, but maxes out at 16A. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09VNYX9Y1/ref=emc_b_5_i There are devices that can supply more, but you need to be careful to find one that can adjust to the supply max current. My 45e maxes out at 16A, so I replaced the OEM one with this new one so if I can find any place to plug in at say a friends, I can use it. I have a 30A EVSE hardwired at home, so don't use the portable one much. Note that the menu in iDrive allows you to set a charging time window and the app will give you a close approximation of the Kw's used to charge. Some prefer the EVSE to do it, but you may not find that important. Last edited by jad03060; 08-13-2023 at 11:59 PM.. |

I've got a 45e. I got a Wallbox I bought on Amazon and it's great. Had to upgrade the panel for the 40a, which I know is overkill but wanted to pay for the upgrade once. Takes about 6 hours from empty to full.
The Wallbox works with Wifi or Bluetooth which is fantastic. It also allows you to schedule and even have separate accounts. I would ask the Condo association to upgrade the box. I tried to exist on the Level 1 charger but the 20 hours it took charge just killed me. Well worth the upgrade to the Level 2. |

Thanks! Did you get the BMW Wallbox or 3rd party? If BMW - does it have more features in terms of metering and scheduling that the bundled plug in fast charger?

its description is here https://a.co/d/iK8F7UC user manual is here https://www.bmw.com/content/dam/bmw/...5932454895.pdf there’s no wifi connectivity for U.S. units so no app control or charging data nor any integration with the MyBMW app despite the similar branding. |

I see this company also has a 110 v 16A charger with standard plug. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FM3L8QK/ref=emc_b_5_t
If my garage has 20A circuit but is wired to 110v plus only - will this provide the same charging speed at the one linked in the comment below that uses the NEMA plug? Or will it still be slower even though it set to 16A? Quote:

I’ve got my original Tesla wall charger which has a 100A breaker. I can dip switch it to dumb down to 40A distribution and am using a Tesla to J1772 adapter I bought.

But, on a 120vac circuit that's typically limited to 20A, code restricts the maximum current to 16A or 80% of the circuit design to account for heat buildup over the extended use time. The 45e is limited to 16A, but the 50e can handle up to 32A. THe FFS unit with the level 2 NEMA plug when plugged into a compatible receptacle can provide up to 40A at 240vac, but you would not want to try to use that plugged into a 120vac circuit, even with an adapter. |

the charging cable you linked first is only level 1 (110/120V) which at 16A will take ~11h to charge an empty battery. the other charging cable you referred to is a combo level 1 and level 2. on level 1, it's the same charging time as i mentioned, but on level 2 due to double the input voltage, it'll take half the time so ~5.5h. incidentally, it's also less expensive **if you have the 50e, the charging times will be based off 20kWh (not 17.1kWh) |

In 2014, I bought an i3 and installed a Clipper Creek 30A unit. It's been working fine. At the time, it was one of few that had a UL rating, and it's made in the USA. It's pretty basic, but that's all I needed.

Hopefully in a few days I'll be getting my new 50e. Can someone tell me how long is the cable of the level1/Level 2 charger that came with the 50e?
Also, does anybody have the part number or link for the NEMA 14-50 adapter for the new generation 50e charging cable? thanks |

I've got a Wallbox Pulsar Level 2 charger at home, purchased from Costco on sale. I'm still waiting for my 50e to arrive so I can actually use it though.

because it wasn’t in stock through my electric company at the time, I didn’t get the ChargePoint i initially wanted but got the JuiceBox instead. call it serendipitous because I now have a dual JuiceBox load-sharing setup which the ChargePoint doesn’t even support. because I went through my electric company, I also receive $40 back annually in the form of a gift card.

Juicebox 40 for me too. I like the unit overall. I like the old app. The new app isn't as good IMO, will see how they can improve back to match previous app level.
