High range is similar on both an ICE and an EV or PHEV...lower speeds, constant speeds, few stops, and with the electrical ones, minimal HVAC actions, ideally, not at night so you're not using lots of lights. It can help if your last miles before you get home are downhill and can gain some significant regeneration!

Truly have no idea. Just hooked up and the next morning range was 52. Only happened once. It seems that I consistently get 43-47.

Mine read 50 this morning. First time I've seen that.

Nice! I’ve only had mine a week today and been getting 45 at every plug in. Great MPG though on a 50 mile trip today got 99.5mpg equivilant in hybrid. Mix of city and hwy.

Seems to be what I get too. Most often 45, sometimes 43, I think I got 52 once or twice.

you guys realize the electric range upon full charge that everyone's posting doesn't really mean anything for the next drive, right?

To me it does. It means that’s the expected range I will get, driving similar then the last day/s.

I am currently in the FL keys. Drove from big Pine Key 3 days in a row to Key West. Speed limit for the 30 miles between 35 and 55 mph and very steady driving. It showed me after the first day a range of 52 miles. I indeed got it the second day. Used 0.7 gallons fuel for 75 miles round trip.

Of course when I am heading home on the weekend I understand that it won’t be 50, but back to 40 miles electric range using the interstate.

Just thought I'd chime in with my European 50e.

Full charge on the highway in Switzerland (80mph) will give me around 50mi of electric range. If there's some lower speed limits or I'm taking B-roads 60mi is easily attainable. My girlfriend is driving 45mi to work 95% of it on highways but with quite a few lower limits and needs just under 80% of battery for it right now. (Not really cold yet.)

Car has 1,300mi and the ICE 180mi. I'll have to wait for the first roadtrips to break in the engine it seems.

Yeah, when I've really watched the instant mi/kwh numbers it seems to me that around 40 mph is the most efficient speed so if you have a commute that averages around that speed with few stops then you should see some numbers that most of us never do.

Seems to be a common misconception. The ICE component of the 50e drive system is 286HP not the 375 available in the 40i.
The combined power of the 50e is quite potent in tandem but either the gas engine or electric motor alone are relatively weak.

Did BMW de-tune the b58 engine in 50e compared to 40i?

Exactly, and why they did that is a mystery to me but BMW obviously knows way more than I do about this stuff.
The 40i calibration yielding 375HP + 197HP(electric)=572 would have been damn cool.
Keep in mind also that the B58 is very seriously underrated and actually put an approximate 440HP to the flywheel as demonstrated in baseline testing applying the generally accepted 15% drivetrain parasitic loss which is likely higher in AWD config.
BMW is known in many instances to present flywheel HP that is actually their wheel HP.

It was 286hp metrical in the 45, which would be 282bhp in freedom-units. The 50e actually has 313hp/309bhp.

Btw. you can't just add the numbers of the electric motor/ICE together as both numbers are peak figures and these two engines don't reach peak power at the same RPM. So while the ICE of the 50e has 230kW and the electric motor has 145kW they give a combined peak power of only 360kW instead of 375kW.

Most likely to not encroach on the M60i, as it would be faster then. You can actually find the same drivetrain but with a B58 that has the 40i map on it in the M760e which seems to be a Europe-exclusive and has 571hp/563bhp. It weighs 100kg more than the X5 M60i and has the same 4.3s 0-100kph so the M60i would then probably be a tough sell in Europe.

Just a caution...some have the 45e and others have the 50e, plus, the useable battery capacity is larger outside of North America, so take that into consideration when comparing electrical ranges reported by people. It is expected that the 50e will have more EV range as it has a larger capacity battery regardless of where it is sold compared to the equivalent 45e.

Electron neophyte here. Why get a plug-in hybrid instead of a full EV? Same charging process, no?

No range anxiety is probably the most important one. With a hybrid you don't have to worry about going on a road trip and not finding a charging station.

My main reason was that back when I ordered in March I couldn't find any EV's that I liked, especially in terms of looks. Unfortunately I didn't know about the Lotus Eletre back then or otherwise I probably would've ordered one instead. The X5 still has that rather "classic" look which I prefer over whatever the iX should be. I hope the iX5 based on the next X5 will be more oriented towards the i4 than the iX.

can you expound further given the i4 is a sedan?

Sure. The i4 has a rather traditional look. Except for it having no exhaust it could be a modern ICE car by the looks of it. (It actually is since it's based on the ICE 4-series and not a completely separate BEV platform like the iX.) On the other hand the iX looks very different and non-traditional. Sure it's likely slightly more efficient but I won't sacrifice the looks for a tiny increase in efficiency especially since the i4 is one of the most efficient BEV in its class despite not looking like a spaceship so it IS possible. Even the interior of the iX is just super weird. It sort of looks like a mixture between an 80's-inspired retro interior and a concept car. Why? Why would you combine wood trim with crystals and have those weird fabric/leather choices for the seats? It's just odd.

I don't know why BMW & Mercedes are trying SO hard to differentiate their pure BEV platforms from their ICE counterparts. Only when they have a shared platform like the i4, i5 or i7 it seems they are able to produce a BEV that doesn't look like a plastic-spaceship. (Although the i7 isn't my favourite either ...) So that gives me hope for the looks of the iX5 since that one will still share its platform with the ICE models and won't be based on the pure BEV "Neue Klasse"-platform yet.
