I’m in the market and test drove a 2022 X5MC today and noticed a bit of a delay when pushing down the accelerator. Is that normal and is there a way to eliminate it?

Turbo lag. It’s normal. Especially obvious if you came from EV or a supercharged car…

Verify which mode you're in. I only drive on sport plus, d2 on tranny and everything else turned up except suspension and steering. Makes a big difference in initial throttle response.

Don’t get any turbo lag in the LCI ‘24. Maybe because of the mild hybrid that works with the transmission for a more immediate torque push…

Mild hybrid 48V system is mostly just to improve start-stop functionality, and be able to stay off at a light for longer period of time. Minimal to no performance benefit, small efficiency benefit. Different ECU tune for 24 is most likely making the difference you feel. If it was a hybrid lets say as Cayenne, you would feel quiet a bit of difference.

Perhaps it’s just the tune. I don’t feel any significant turbo lag. I did feel lots in the X3M comp 2020 not as much in the 2022 X3M comp LCI. Just my experience. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Mild Hybrid does provide limited electric assist.

whatever BMW did with the LCI, the lag vs the non-LCI is way better.

I'm sure it does account for the start and stop, but there is performance behind it.

"A behemoth lies beneath the hood of the X5 M Competition: the 617 hp 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine, complete with Twin Scroll Bi-Turbo and racetrack cooling system. The 2024 model adds BMW's latest 48V mild-hybrid technology to enhance acceleration and responsiveness. Shift smoothly using the 8-speed M Sport transmission with Drivelogic and all-new CFRP shift paddles. The motor generates 12 horsepower and 148 pound-feet torque."

I agree that it must help with initial acceleration as the V8 is down a lot of torque vs non LCI and that’s a lot of torque just to make start/stop smoother.

What would be considered the correct modes?

I have an X7 M60 LCI with the S68 and mild hybrid system. One of the most common complaints amongst reviewers (and myself) is that there is a short lag between putting your foot down and the engine doing anything. Basically the car is dead from a complete stop for a split second before doing anything. No known fix unfortunately (this isn’t turbo lag).

My data point: 24 X5M, little to no delay, even in normal. I'm saying little just because I'm perhaps less sensitive than others; to me it seems to go right away.

100% the LCI has zero lag even in comfort mode and the only difference in switching to sport and sport plus is the level of thrust increases. The pre-LCI has major lag in comfort mode and it gets reduced a lot in sport mode and even more so in sport plus, but it is slightly still there. It's noticeable off the line going against a Tesla. Seems like everyone that doesn't have a LCI doesn't want to believe that the 48V battery actual gave it an improvement.

I didn't drive the older versions, but there is no lack of immediate thrust now.

Of course if I wasn't wanting to dump into a lease or take on horrible depreciation I wouldn't hesitate to throw a pedal commander at an older model. Those really work over at Porsche, where some have an awful pedal out of the hole. I'd at least be doing some reading about it.

I have a Pre LCI and there is no lag. If anything its too responsive sometimes when everything is turned up.
