The Curb Hugger Dilemma

Susoa crabman Gfit Oldgixxer

Given parking at an end cap is a no brainer, protecting one side of the vehicle from dents, academics argue the potential risk tradeoff between hugging the curb as close to the wheel as possible to centering the vehicle between the parking spot lines normally.

While parking as far as possible from the vehicle next to you seems safe as first, this may lead a careless person in the other vehicle to think they have sufficient room to open their door widely and perhaps even forcefully, let alone potentially losing control of the door on a windy day!

Positioning the vehicle centered between the lines negate the issues discussed at length above.

What say you?

Since I have a handicap placard,The Golden Ticket for parking spaces for me is the handicapped section where there is a large space between other handicap spots,so I utilize those spots and take full advantage of the extra room. Works as planned.

Otherwise,I park as pictured above and hope for the best. Only issue is pulling out and being aware you may curb your rear wheel if you don't wait til you cleared the spot before you turn the steering wheel(depending if you're hugging the R/L side)
No guarantees as there is always that one D-Bag out there. Otherwise I drop off my wife in front of our destination and will roam until I find a spot away from everyone.
Or we just take her car thats already dinged(since parking spots don't matter to her)so I dont have anxiety attacks about parking mine

She had her new 430i for two days,we went shopping and she didn't feel like using the prime handicap spot I pointed out to her...only to find a large ding on the passenger door when we came out of the store.

I swear if there was ever an " I told you so" moment

Good! Now we have a car for shopping / running errands

I would advise to avoid the "I told you so" and go for a more covert tactic of "would you like me to get it fixed for you mam?"

Oh trust me,I'm well aware of the "happy wife, happy life" saying. It's worked for 25yrs so far. All it takes is one "I told you so" to ruin it lmfao

I casually like to use the years of happiness to deter from dwelling on the little negative moments 😁.

I like to use the term “let’s learn from this situation.”

Also the parking does also largely depend on the parking grounds you have to work with. Sometimes it’s unavoidable to sandwich between others unless you just go out of the way to avoid them.

Just kills me inside seeing people swing open their doors.

I take up as many spots as I deem necessary as I am a real BMW driver.

Handicap placard is the way to go, or park way out in the middle of nowhere. But, sometimes people like to be funny and park right next to you anyways (I know I did!).

I travel a lot and I'm used to walking old world style. I park as far away as I need to in order to get a spot where it becomes a malicious effort on the part of a Richard in order to successfully dent or scratch my car.

I'm on my second marriage, the woman on a pedestal thing only applies to the first marriage, you get smarter after that. She knows I'm going to find the safest possible parking, if she doesn't want to walk whatever distance that may be, then I've no choice but to respect her decision to stay home.

Now that is constructive. I particularly like the covert "let's" which really means "you should"...

It wasn't a shot at anyone and I did understand you to be joking. I just don't subscribe to the happy wife paradigm because I've done it once and it isn't something I wanted to repeat.

I'm quite devoted to Mrs Crab 2.0, and have a great respect and admiration for her, don't get me wrong. I'm just not doing the silent suffering thing anymore, I've moved on to mutual respect and I'm a lot happier for it.

I'm old, seen way too much of cancer, and I genuinely hope you're past it. Congrats on finding a keeper, nothing better if you can swing it.

I go out of my way to find the perfect end spot, or park far far away from others. It doesn't matter. Some moron will ultimately park right next to me over the lines when there are plenty of other spaces. Not long ago, a guy parked right on top of me as I was approaching my car in an empty part of a parking lot, far away from the stores. I told him that the etiquette for parking spaces was the same as urinals. You don't park next to me if there are open spaces, I'm a girl (an old lady actually) and I know that. It was pretty funny.

I won't take up multiple spaces. I feel like that screams screw with me. But whatever works for you.

I see a dent, I pay to repair the dent...hate them more than buying furniture. Parking for me is a strategic game. Find the isolated spot, park close to the curb, just as the OP discussed above. I dont care if the walk is long...I need the exercise anyway.

Even parking way out in boonies, if you take up more than one spot, that’s going to upset somebody. Maybe they think it’s the same as using two urinals at the same time. Which I also do, while wearing sunglasses (a cardinal sin as well in a bathroom).

The M2 and X5 look cool and don’t solicited too much negative attention. I’ve been lucky that most people liked the cars. And seem to appreciate/understand the end cap parking theory. The X4? Fuck that one. I’ll even park it next to the shopping cart corral if I have too.

Speaking of shopping carts, that was a concern in Vegas with the wind. Had to check the area and parking lot slope due to the breezy nature and nobody returns their carts.

Yeah, good call on the shopping carts, people can be find all kinds of ways not to be good neighbors, when they put their minds to it.

In my younger days growing up in NY,if this happened to me that person would find either a dent or a keyed up door panel and sometimes even both on their car just for being a dickhead. And it was a bonus for me if that dickhead happened to have an aftermarket alarm on their car,as car alarms just became a thing in the '90s and I'd purposely wait until the alarm did one cycle after I dented or keyed their car before I left the parking spot. I was very well aware of the consequences and didn't give AF.

Happened 3x and I have the scars to prove it. I was uh,kinda short tempered in my 20's

If you park like an A-hole,expect to get treated like an A-hole

1000x this.

To be honest, while I don't wish it on anyone, I would not shed a single tear for anyone that parks taking multiple sport and gets their car damaged. In my eyes, you kind of deserved it.

Everyone wants to protect their cars, especially when the car is one like ours, but that does not give you the right to be a dickhead.
