We have a permit for driving on the sand at Assateague, but have only used our ‘97 Jeep. My husband bought a set of auto tire deflators which makes the prep faster.

We also have a highlander with AWD, but have never used it on sand. I might insist next time. The Jeep has no AC and the passenger window doesn’t open.

The drive is short, but it is VERY hairy. Even with deflated tires you slip and slide all over the place. The sand is extremely soft, not hard-packed.

How would run-flat tires work with deflation? Seems to me they might not work as well on soft sand. Does anyone know?

I have a permit for another truck and take it all the time. I also have the deflators and an air compressor for when I get out of the sand.
I would like the option of using the X5 once in a while but would hate to be "that guy" - the one that got stuck. I guess I could always have the other truck on stand-by if I got stuck?!?

I was that guy in my X3 with run flat knobby winters years ago. Unfortunately run flats don't flatten out enough to get more surface area/traction as we got stuck halfway in. Had to be winched out. The X drive system in the new X5 I'm sure is more advanced but tires (if the limited factor) will def get you stuck.

On reading all of the above about deflating tires and especially when I have RF's - I don't think I will be taking a chance of driving it on the beach this 4th Especially not when I have a pregnant wife about to give birth in a couple of months, in the car with me

I had a feeling that might be the case with run flats. If they don’t flatten, trust me you will get stuck unless it is damp hard-packed sand.

Congrats on baby to be! Is this your first? If so, enjoy your summer of freedom. Everything changes ....
