I too would like to know (like the poster above) how to disable wireless charging so at least the tray can be used for other purposes or even storing the phone.
I am sure there are some great threads from the past as in the link above but when I try to go within the "General Topics" I can only see unto 89 pages that go back to early 2023 - How do I go further back? Is there an archive that I am missing?
i don't think anyone has actually disabled their wireless charger whether by taking it out or pulling the fuse for it. just place your phone in the tray face-down or place something think and non-conductive in between so it won't activate the charging coils.

I had a 2021 530e and charged my iPhone 15 without it over heating. Traded that car in and in my LCI X6M60i, the same phone over heats on the wireless charger. So I cut a piece of shelf paper, covered it with felt and put it on top of the wireless charger. I can use the space and the phone doesn't charge wirelessly. I have a usb-c cord plugged in to the armrest for when I need to charge my phone.

iPhone 15 Pro Max, no problem with it getting hot. It'll get a little warm at most. It's in an Otterbox MagSafe case.

my iPhone 14 Pro in an Otterbox Defender case gets so hot after an hour or two on the wireless charging pad that the phone shuts down and says Protection From Overheating or something. I rarely charge my phone ever in my vehicle and now leave it in my coat pocket or a cupholder as opposed to putting it on the charging pad.

Just a semi-annual reminder to make sure that your iPhones are updated to the latest version of iOS. They definitely changed something within the last couple months to improve the iPhone charging experience with the BMW wireless chargers.

I have noticed fewer problems with heat after updating. Some others have reported no change, but at least it's not bricking phones any more.

Is there something about this charger that caused the screen to stay active? This would explain the heat and lack of charge.

I wireless charge at home and the phone screen is not active does not heat up at all.
Yesterday, I was on a 45 minute trip and tried charging while not streaming anything including music. I confirmed that the screen was not active.

Phone got just as toasty but in 45 minutes went for 89% battery life to 90%.

Using advance search with “posts older than 1 year” is the only way to go back o older posts that I have figured out thus far. Appreciate if anyone knows a better method.

We tried something similar in a Chevy Bolt ($30k window sticker) yesterday:

- Reliable CarPlay connection
- Used Maps via CarPlay for routing
- Used Music via CarPlay
- Phone screen not active
- Phone with a case got toasty as well, but not hot
- Drove 25 to 30 minutes
- Went from 85% to 90%

The same phone in my 50e in the same situation would get hot and in a best case hold % or more likely still go down. That’s why I stopped using the wireless charging pad.

I like your idea. Will implement as well either with felt or non slip soft leather.

Instead of the armrest I would recommend the Ainope USB 12V dual USB C charger. Fits the 12V receptacle in my 50e and you still can close the cover when no cable plugged in.

My S23+ charges fine with the wireless BMW X5 charger. If the phone is not in use (waze/spotify/android auto) I get about 12% charge every 30 minutes. That's not fast but it helps keep my phone charged. The phone does not get hot. It will get warm if running android auto on the charger. Perhaps people having trouble charging are using a cellphone case causing the issue. I have a wireless compatible cellphone case.

I have a 14pro. Friday on a 90 minutes or so drive to the mtns with CarPlay audio going I had no problems. It got warm but didn't overheat. I didn't check the charge but I assume it was minimal.

Then on the way home a bit over 2 hours - not playing audio - but again no problems.

I've definitely noticed it getting quite warm at times but it's never overheated. However, it doesn't charge either.

That's exactly what is happening with my iPhone...get crazy hot when using Waze for example.

That could explain why I don't seem to have as much of an overheating problem as others describe here--I usually use Apple Maps.

I also have the same phone and case. Mine gets really hot, but not hot enough to trigger a warning from the iPhone yet. I haven't had a chance yet though to let it sit there for an hour or more, maybe at the one hour mark.

it only does it for me on a highway trip of a few hours. I just don't put the phone on the charging pad at all any more, no reason to.

Just another person weighing in. I have a Galaxy S20+ and it gets warm on the charger when using Android Auto, but doesn't overheat. I took an hour trip to a friend's house and used google maps to get there (new route since no toll tag yet) and it didn't overheat. I drove for about 45 minutes this past weekend while streaming music/Android Auto and it didn't overheat. I have not tried to just put it on there for charging purposes without Android auto to see if it gets warm/hot but will after work for testing purposes.

I did have a loaner '24 X3 last week and the wireless charging would not charge my phone no matter which way I put it on there though. Probably not related though.

I'm now convinced it's the charger. Drove all day in a rental Cadillac, with S22 mimicking the exact setup I have in X5 - Android auto/google maps/music streaming. The phone remained barely warm while charging just fine. In X5 it would overheat several times.

Charged my iPhone 13 Pro Max on the wireless mat the other day for about three hours of driving, all with Apple Music streaming and Apple Maps navigating. Phone didn't add much charge but it barely got warm.

If you haven't updated your device lately, you really should do that.

Don't know what those updates are (I have all the latest updates to my iPhone), but even yesterday I had severe iPhone 14 Pro Max heating issues, due to wireless charging to a point, where it wouldn't work until it cooled down.
