The same also happens when I enter some parking structures and the entry gate is a tight squeeze
I am not sure I have heard of this quite useful feature.

The sensors on the sides of the front and rear bumpers pick up on there being a nearby object, and the 3d view changes to a view of that particular part of the car.

If you have 360 view, it should do this automatically.

Garage List
every morning I leave for work, when I place my car in gear, it warns both visually and alarmingly that my front driver corner is very close to an obstacle (my garage door opening).

My thinking is...if i need to use park assist to perpendicular park....that means i'm probably working in a tight squeeze and a possible moron who will open their door and ding my car...

I've never actually used it for perpendicular parking myself, but my point was simply that to address the previous comment that it only finds spaces if you're really close to the parked cars. I am alerted to spaces from quite a distance away.
