New Car Shopping

We are looking at a new car to replace my X1.

The two that we're down are really quite different, so direct comparisons are rather difficult. So I would love to hear what others have to say. My search initially was focused on the Miata, but ultimately space issues (like my wife could barely fit both her feet and purse on the passenger side floor) made us rule it out.

The first option is a Supra 2.0, which keeps the 2-seater aspect of the Miata, but has significantly more space. However it is way more money than I originally intended to spend (bottom line is I am cheap).

The second option is a Kia Stinger GT (3.3L V6). This is absolutely the more practical choice and honestly is a good compromise between practicality and performance.

While I know my BMW is a lowly X1, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I feel quite confident that the Supra will do that, but am less sure of this with the Stinger.

I would love to hear from anyone who has owned the Stinger on how it managed to fulfill their driver fun needs.

I should add that the Stinger has the benefit of being basically $5K less than the Supra and is only about $3K higher than my starting budget versus the Supra being about $8K more.

Funny thing is that I think I feel better about spending the extra $$$ on the Supra.

I should also say that we tend to keep our cars for extended periods (10 years plus).

I would get the Stinger. Its really a very weird cross-shop to begin with but coming from an X1 it sounds like you may value the extra space and seat/doors on certain occasions. Also, the 3.3 V6 is much better than the 2.0 I4 in my opinion.

I'm personally not a fan of the new Supra, but I think the only way to go with that car would be the 3.0 but even still, you'll still get all of the awful buffeting issues as well as of course the lack of manual which is a bit disappointing.

If you are looking into the 2.0 Supra, I recommend you watch Matt Farah's review on the car. To me it doesn't really seem worth spending the extra cash, but that's just my $0.02.

I've purposely not driven the 3.0 so as not to be biased, or is that tempted!

My X1 is the 2L and the little Supra definitely outperforms it. In fact while the HP is lower, I think it feels faster than my X1 did with the JB4 that I have since removed and sold.

The extra space was a factor when I bought the X1. But now our youngest daughter is a senior in college, so that is less important. Still the Stinger would clearly be a much better option for the wife and I to a weekend or week long road trip.

One of my concerns is at over 4000 lbs, how much fun the Stinger would be to run HPDE in.

CAR Magazine has a good reputation so I enclosed this video. For me the Supra is very desirable. Are they discounting the Supra's heavily ?

To me the Supra is very good looking. There is the issue of window down air-pressure booming and whatever, but that wouldn't phase me at all.

The Supra I'm looking at is 10% off (best deal locally). For comparison I can get the Stinger at 14% off.

Why not a 2 series like the 230i ? esp. since you liked the X1 so much, get with M sport package and retail at 44K.

I did not particularly care for the look of this car when it first came out, but my opinion has definitely shifted.

It is a car that certainly stands out, but it most definitely is something people tend to love or hate. I personally have come around to loving it

A great replacement for Miata is the new BRZ. It is much roomier inside with rear seats and decent trunk space. Its much more useable than Supra and looks better as well.

BWM X1 vs Kia Stinger vs Toyota Supra ... these choices could not be more different.

Is getting another X1 an option?

For the price and practicality factor, Kia Stinger is difficult to ignore.

Dodge Charger Scat Pack Widebody.
It’s direct competition to the stinger so it’s something that should be considered.

The new 2022 is likely too far off, but there is a new 2020 Toyota 86 that I haven't completely ruled out. Certainly the best price by far.

If you are going 4 cylinder then definitely get the new GT86/BRZ. I had a 6MT FRS and it was a proper sports car. I loved that car but to be honest I was over the wimpy powertrain after a couple of years.

I wouldn't even bother looking at a 4 cylinder supra. IMO the new 400hp Z with a 6MT is the car to get if you're looking for a sports car.

No offense, but I wouldn't touch a Chrysler product with someone else's 10 foot pole.

If I was someone who leased, maybe. But as a buyer not a chance.

Same sentiment for Nissan as Chrysler for me.

Once upon a time they were not bad, but their mergers have killed any quality in their product.

Have you ever owned one yourself or are you just going off of hearsay?
If any Dodge is going to be reliable it’s going to be the Challenger/Charger. Its platform has been around forever and many of the changes over the years have been cosmetic. Dodge is actually number 1 on the JD Power Initial Quality list and number 2 is Kia.

Yes I have owned Chrysler products, as have family & friends. They were bad enough then and have only gotten worse since Fiat got involved. Yes the Challenger/Charger is likely to be the most reliable, but they are still on the lower end. But hey, to each their own. You may have had nothing but great luck with them.

JD Power awards have no merit to me as they are 100% bought & paid for and are not based on merit in the slightest. And yes, I know this for a fact from direct experience related to the industry I am in.

I guess that means Kia’s top rankings the past few years is also worthless. Well good luck.

It means that this particular ranking has played absolutely no part in my decision making process. Sorry if you can't handle differing opinions than your own
