X5 45e DRIVING RANGE

I have had my 45e for about 4 months and keeping track of my average miles per charge. Although I have ranged from 31 - 43 miles on a charge my average is about 34 miles. I am in Southern CA and most roads are flat and the average temperature is 80. Car A/C is set at 71. I have only filled the gas tank once in about 2700 miles.
I'm just interested in how others are doing.

I am getting between 35 and 40 miles of range without using any heat or AC. I have noticed that on colder mornings (40 to 45 degrees), the range is closer to 35. I assume optimal temperature would be around 70 but we haven't gotten there yet here in NJ.

I have put 600 miles on the car so far and have not burned off even a 1/4 of the dealer's tank of gas.

A full charge is about 35 miles for me. Also in Cali with mostly flat roads. Approaching 6 months since my last gas stop and I also run solar at home so my costs are pretty low to run this

I'm new to the electric / hybrid game so I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

Can someone check my math for me:

Battery capacity is 24 kWh
Range is ~35 miles til empty give or take

1 kWH here in NY is ~25 cents including supply (~11c), delivery (~12c) and taxes

Therefore, to charge an empty battery costs 24 * .25 = $6

at ~$4.7 per gallon I could drive ~20 mpg on gas only, so for 35 miles it'll cost 35/20*4.7 = $8.225

So gas =~ $8.225 vs pure electric at ~$6

Am I in the right ballpark?

While the battery holds 24 kWh, you only get access to 17 kWh (in the US). Thus you should be using 17 as the multiplier, rather than 24. Otherwise, your methodology is correct.

Everyone drives different places and routes and makes different amount of stops. Its not about miles its about how many stops you make. Each stop significantly increases average energy consumption. Rough estimate, several stops during 10 mile flat trip ~ 2miles per kw/h, same 10 miles with no stops ~ 3.2 miles per kw/h.

There are some losses in the conversion from ACV to DCV needed to charge the batteries, and, the system MIGHT have to turn on cooling for the batteries, depending on starting temperature and the ambient, so you'll always put more into the vehicle than actually goes into the batteries. You can figure about 95% or a 5% loss for the conversion, and may or may not see a loss for cooling. That's using a level 2...level 1 is less efficient as it loses more trying to upconvert to the 380vdc or so needed to charge the batteries. That's probably at least a few percentage points lower than level 2.

can't use 17 as the multiplier because that doesn't account for any charging losses. White340 needs to multiply his rate by the actual kWh pumped back in. when charging a fully empty (U.S.) battery, mine pumps back in ~21kWh, therefore it costs me ~$2.59 to 'fill up' ($0.12 * 21)

My cost is also about $2.50 to totally fill. If using premium gas at $6 per gallon it would cost about $9. Also it feel great not to have to go to a gas station.

I think you more or less have to calculate electricity-based mileage the way you would for gas.
Use electric only for one or more periods of driving.
Tally up the total kWh used to charge the car over that period of time.
Calculate the total you paid for that much electricity.
Figure how many miles you went per dollar, and compare with how many miles you would go per dollar of gasoline.

It seems like that would be the easiest way to cover all the variables such as how much energy the battery actually stored and how much electricity was used for things that do not actually move the car...?

I haven't been able to actually measure the real distance it has allowed me to go only on electric for a full charge. I can tell you that the indicator never shows more than about 32 when full. I get the sense I am doing better than that, just haven't actually measured it. The 35 remarked by others is probably accurate. Live in the southeast with flat roads, never cold enough to make a real effect.

Any idea how much use of the massaging seats and ventilated/heated seats draws from the range? Just curious because I have noticed when idle for a good half hour or so a noticeable amount of range is eaten up.

Anyone primarily driven the car in Adaptive? Curious how much range they get on one tank?

Couple of clarifications since i am in NY area. I am on Con Edison off-peak charging plan - it’s around 6c to 11c per kWH for overnight charging. Will make huge difference to your calculations. Also, even if the battery capacity is 24kW, the usable capacity in US is around 17KW. With charging losses, the full charge is around 20KwH. So the full charge is around $1.20 to $2.20

That's including delivery charges? More than half my bill with PSEG Long Island is delivery.

Yes, the off peak delivery charges for Time of Use customers is 1.8c.

Since you mentioned NYC, I brought it up. But since you are on LI, not familiar with the utility programs there.

In urban with lots of stop, go and hills, I can only get 24 miles.

On a road trip I got like 50 miles, of course that requires using ICE and lots of regen

Adaptive on a road-trip, starting with a full battery, I got a bit over 500-miles before I had to stop for fuel. I'm not sure it's all that much different than running in hybrid mode.

I am the same here with flat roads, driving around town is mostly battery, can average 90klm a day so I am happy.

i think it would be fair to mention to breslaw and others here that you've had the Mission Tuning range extension performed your range results are not of a typical, unmodified 45e

My best day just on electric, a mix of urban and rural driving. UK weather was mild so no air con or heating used.
