My HK in the 2016 X6 seemed alot louder/fuller than the HK I have in the current 2021 X5.
I can crank the radio in the X5 up to 3/4 full blast and still sounds like what my X6 sounded at 1/2 full volume !!!

Hey All,
I just ordered a X5 too, well I was able to modify an existing order earlier this week that has a 112 status. I haven't received my vehicle inquiry form, but I can update all on what it includes for reference. I did call up a local car audio shop in the Boston area. They basically said take the discount happily and apply to aftermarket system (I know... of course that's what they would want). But they were pretty adamant that the sound would be way better than the upgraded HK system, but would cost about $3-5k... In any case, I'm not going to cancel my order if I get dropped to stock, but I'm going to try and negotiate more than the $750 or whatever the reduction is to use to buy something better in aftermarket... Just something to consider |

Heard back from the dealer today. Doesn’t sound like the HK is coming back. I priced some aftermarket systems. Couple of thousand and up, and I’m not sure how well they will integrate. I’ll probably just cancel the order.
Edit: I was just noticing that the HK is still available on the X1, X3 and X7 build sites, but not on a X5. So they still have them, just installing them on the lesser selling models. I guess they figure it will hurt X5 sales less that the others? Just a guess. Last edited by Drothgeb; 02-26-2021 at 06:10 AM.. |

BMW and HK have a long history. I can’t see them not coming back together after this is over. Even if for some reason they don’t, they’ll have another premium sound option to replace it.

Didn't BMW have Bose at one time (recently, like 2014 to 2016) ??

I don’t recall them ever having Bose, but I admittedly only had a 2012 and 2018 during that time frame (both with HK).

BMW Audio systems BMW had three basic audio system levels - Stereo, HiFi, and Top HiFi/DSP. These sound systems can be controlled by the iDrive navigation system or by the Professional CD player. (In the US, rarely see the “Business CD” head unit, the E83 X3 being the notable exception). In some M cars, the Top system is Individual or Enhanced Premium. In most BMWs, the Top system is branded Logic 7 or Harman/Kardon. Base Stereo The base Stereo system has no tweeters and no amp. The speakers are powered directly by the head unit, with a heavily-equalized signal. In US-spec cars it could be found in: – 2010 and early 2011 E90 sedans (non-M) – 2010 and early 2011 E92 coupes (non-M) – 2010 and early 2011 E82 coupes – 2010 and 2011 E70 X5 HiFi The HiFi system was standard in US-spec cars until MY 2010 (when it was replaced in some cars with base Stereo) and again starting in mid-2011. There are tweeters and an amp, but no graphic equalizer settings in the head unit’s user menu. The amplifier has analog inputs. Pre-2010 HiFi amps are large black modules. 2010 and later HiFi amps in E9x vehicles can be small metallic-colored modules. 2006-2009 E90 sedans Later 2011 E90 sedans 2006-2011 E91 wagons 2007-2009 E92 coupes Later 2011 E92 coupes 2008-2011 E93 convertibles 2008-2009 E82 coupes Later 2011 E82 coupes 2008-2011 E87 convertibles 2004-2010 E83 SAV 2006-2009 E70 X5 (includes center channel) Later 2011 E70 X5 (includes center channel) Later 2008-2010 E60 sedans (Note: early E60 sedans have an unusual hybrid system called “HiFi”) Premium Sound — Logic 7 (up to 2009) — harman/kardon (2010-up) — Individual Audio (early M3, for example) — Enhanced Premium (late 2008-up M3, M5) The Premium Sound system differs by vehicle and by model year. For example, a 2009 335 sedan will have a “Logic 7”-branded system, where a 2008 M3 will have either the Individual or the Enhanced Premium. Premium Sound systems in these vehicles always have a graphic equalizer setting in the head unit’s menu, as well as a “Logic 7” or “Surround” on/off option. The E90/1/2/3, the E60/61, and the E70 will have center-channel dash speakers and two sets of rear speakers (the E8x vehicles will not).

X5 just started production today and X6 has a build week of 15. Both are also showing HK in the build tracker/options list. |

My order was placed 2/11 and today my build still shows HK on the tracker.
Manufacturer should not just downgrade you for something you ordered. They should upgrade you at no cost to the B&W. |

I'm working with a guy in Boston area, he's suggesting some of the following components, but I'm waiting for more details from him on how it will all work together. But he generally told me we should just replace all the speakers, but use nicer ones in the front, can go cheaper in the back since you won't really hear them.
recommended speakers https://www.focal-america.com/product/es100k/ http://www.quartorigo.com/speakers/ Tempo 4" Audio Development Italy https://7165bdf8-961b-43d7-a79b-8c7b...b12ef43bbf.pdf He suggested replacing the woofers under the seats with https://www.focal-america.com/product/isub-bmw-4/ Then suggested a amp/dsp combo https://mosconi-america.com/portfolio/d21004dsp/ I need to better understand what speakers will be powered by the amp versus the stock radio. I'll update once I hear back. But he was convinced that anything we do will sound so much better than the HK and that there shouldn't be any integration issues. |

Well... I took the X5 to the Stealer on Thursday, trying to figure out why there is a scratchy-grinding noise coming from the right front wheel during slow braking (obviously they couldn't replicate it after 2 days)
Anyways.. in those 2 days, they gave me a basic X5 with a "standard" radio... let me tell ya something, for a vehicle that has a base cost $60k+ , BMW should be ashamed of the basic radio they put in that SUV.!!! It sounded very "tinnie" no real bass quality to the music.. sounded worse than the POS radio in my kids 2009 Jetta (just got rid of that as it was finally dying after 135k miles). Honestly the HK should be standard on these cars, and then upgrade from there. I'm still smh
