Hi everyone, we've owned our 24' X5M for about 8 months. However, the brakes started making a squealing sound about 4 months ago. Initially, we thought it might be normal, but today we received an email from one of the dealers suggesting that squealing brakes could indicate poor brake performance and recommending a service inspection. Not sure if it's just a promotional email, but has anyone else experienced squealing brakes with this model? Also, if it's a brake problem, will BMW cover the replacement cost, considering it might be covered under warranty?
The contents in the email are as below: |

It’s normal. Dealer won’t be able to fix it with oem parts.

I would say that receiving the email was coincidental, but you can call the service advisor and chat with him/her and explain your concerns. I have not had that issue at all, but I drive a 2023.

I just did a very hard braking after accelerating and that solved my issue for now. Only had my car for 2 weeks and yesterday it was squeeking like crazy at the moment before the car stops. So this morning , I gunned it and stomped on the brakes in a safe area and that removed the squeeking for me.

Mine was doing the same thing and BMW said it was because of the break dust.
After I washed the car and thoroughly cleaned the wheels, that stopped… for 3-4 days LOL! |

This will only get worse over time. All M cars do it especially the heavier ones. Do youself a favor and get some isweep 2000 or EBC Red brake pads. Way less dust and completely silent. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner and dealing with my car sounding like a old bus for 3 years.
the hard stops or washing the wheels/brakes only lasts for a short period of time before it comes back. The dirtier the wheels/rotors the worse it gets.

Was it just a temporary solution that lasted only a few days? I really suspect there could be a quality issue. Does this issue happen to other M cars?

Has to be very hard , like stomp on the brake full force that you get whiplash, lol. It hasn’t come back yet. But this probably is only temporary but it’s easy enough solution for me to do in my driveway every few days if this continues to work. Changing the brake pads is more of a hassle to me then doing this since this does not take any extra time out of my busy day to do 🤷🏻‍♂️

Squicking or otherwise noisy breaks is anything but normal.
BMW is using an inferior compound for the OEM pads, which creates excessive dust, which causes the noise. Whoever is trying to convince you that the noise is normal is either lying or doesn't know what they are talking about. I swapped my pads for iSweep and the noise issue was solved and never came back. r33_RGSport sells the proper pads and am sure will be happy to help. |

I've change pads on my car several times (had to do rotors at some point) and its straight forward. If you can change your own oil you can likely change the pads. You do need the Bimmerlink app to put the rear calipers into service mode if your pads are worn down. On new cars swapping pads is even easier since the caliper wouldn't have to be pushed back because the old pad and new will be nearly the same thickness.

Have not done it on my 2023, but I did on my 2019 X3...there are some YouTube videos out there that helped me...a few that I watched and had no issues.

It seemed easy except the prying it apart and reading other posts you have to electronically push something in or you will get errors when you start the car and only the dealer can clear ?

This is the video I used when I did my 2019 a few yrs back. The electronic thing you mention is the reset, which this guy does toward the end of the video.

there was a video Porsche released and it explains why the real sport cars squeak - it has to do with vibration frequency with large break callipers - im sure the cheap pads have something to do with it as well but they state it is a normal and expected thing. Not sure if anyone knows about the video im talking about it was posted in this forum a bit ago.
As for isweep 2000 - will BMW install these for me if I buy them? My 2024 x5m if ur curious is 2mo old and has been squeeing since the first month. Not very painfully loud yet like my 2022 m50 did but its there. |

The electronic thing I was referring was to retract the pistons ? Seems to be conflicting information if you can just push in or there is something electronically you can make it retract
