So my sales advisor told me that adding the acoustic glass wont really help the tire noise on rough gravel since that sound comes from below. He said the acoustic glass will only help with honks, motorbikes and passing vehicle noise.
Is that true? Especially when driving over concrete roads there is a specific noise from the car - does acoustic glass help with reducing those or is my sales advisor correct? Also, I am looking for 21in rims and he said the 21s produce more noise than 20s on the same road. I guess I am finding acoustic glass not worth the investment. But can you guys who have this option give some feedback. Thanks. |

Edit: What you are looking for is to see if there is a marking above the E with circle around it. You should hopefully see // which would indicate acoustic/laminated. Last edited by TurtleBoy; 01-24-2020 at 09:46 AM.. |

I am referring specifically to the side glass. I had inquired before ordering about it, but it is just not offered in Canada as an option. After delivery, I remember explicitly checking my side glass for the codes that would indicate that they are acoustic and it is not there. BMW Canada gave some explanation about the standard glass in Canada being thicker or better acoustically than in the US, making the difference more subtle and not worth offering acoustic as an option. I don't necessarily buy that excuse (and did not look for part numbers or evidence of this) but at the end of the day, the cars I test drove were already very quiet (compared to my x4 and the 335 i had before that)and it was becoming too much of a chore to get the better acoustic glass. |

Yes, they are standard as far as I know. I wasn't sure if you were referring to all windows or not. I would think BMW Canada is feeding you a line and it is the same glass that is used in all other countries.

I have acoustic glass on my upcoming car. The price is now 600.00. Why has the price gone up? Anyone know? I see some have paid 150.00 or 300.00.

Because it is a popular option and people will buy it at $600 so extra revenue. I'm not sure if it was verified but some have posted that originally it was just the front windows for $150.

Acoustic glass is laminated glass rather than toughened glass.
Windscreens have always been laminated glass. On Range Rovers which I am more used to in the UK specify that the driver and front passenger windows are laminated. No mention of acoustic, but that is thereason. |

Not only is it good from an acoustic point of view but its very difficult to break it in an attempt to get into your car and in case of a side accident, it won't shatter all over your lap. |

If you look at a piece of laminated glass at certain angles you can usually make out a repeating pattern which I presume is a result of the manufacturing process of plastic layer.

Yes that is laminated glass in your post, not to be confused with toughened glass.
Toughened glass, or tempered glass, is a high-strength glass that is up to 5 times stronger than ordinary glass. To make toughened glass, a standard strength pane of glass is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled – forming an incredibly durable outer layer that can withstand impacts and temperature changes with ease. |
