CarPlay iOS automation to auto-launch Waze for work/home route notifications
I wanted the ability to get me waze directions (mostly for the notifications) to and from my commute each day, but only on week days. This automation automatically launches Waze with directions/eta to your work (at your specified hours and work days) as well directions/eta to your home (at specified hours). You don't have to do anything, as soon as your phone connects to CarPlay in your vehicle, iOS does the rest.
Make sure you have your work address saved as the work favorite in Waze. Same for your home address as well. (credit: reddit user) 1. download and install this to shortcuts app (carplay trigger):https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/5e8...c61328d84578f3 2. download and install this to shortcuts app (Take me to work 6-10am):https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/14b...0fea224b359729 3. download and install this to shortcuts app (Take me home 3pm-6pm):https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/2e6...26a922ddc564f1 4. In the shortcuts app, click the automations tab on the bottom, click the plus sign in the upper right and make a personal automation. Choose "when CarPlay connects" and on the next screen, click disable "ask before running". Then for action, choose apps - shortcuts - run shortcut and then select the CarPlay trigger shortcut. if you don't want to use Waze you can set it any other app you like, just ensure that Home and Work addresses are appropriately set in those apps for it to work. I'm gonna try and figure out how to add holidays and other events to further customize this automation. Last edited by thereef510; 02-24-2020 at 06:19 PM.. |

This is great! I would add that you need to go to Settings - Shortcuts - Allow Untrusted Shortcuts first before hitting any of the links.
I modified it a bit and added waze navigation to daughter's school in the morning based on my proximity to the school, pretty neat!

I've used this trick to start an speedtrap/radar app when I step into the car. But I don't want the screen to go to carplay. Do you know how to change that? I want the speedtrap/radar app to run in the background and use the buildin BMW Navigation.

I've played around with IFTTT for home automation (turning lights on and off at set times etc). Anyone got any interesting ones for the BMW?
As an aside, I've not managed to get any of the location based ones to work either, so any hints/tips from gurus welcome! |

Something I found more useful in my situation (directions not needed for me), is using Alexa to tell me my drive time based on traffic reports before I leave the home. I do have my lights setup with IFTTT, so if its past 4pm and I arrive home the lights I have set turn on when garage door opens, just can't get the door to auto unlock to the home due to need of a pin..... Soon I'm guessing more auto tech will allow for more IOT devices.

Cool. I'm trying to set it up so outside lights turn on when I get within a mile of my home, but can't figure what I'm doing wrong (if indeed I am - it's a work phone with all sorts of little privilege and security tweaks). Once I've cracked that, I'll broaden the range and get it to boost the heating as well. I'd wondered whether I could use ConnectedDrive somehow.

i believe it wont work UNLESS it goes to carplay first because that's the triggering event to run the automation.

I have a bunch of lutron caseta light and fan switches all over the house. those are Apple HomeKit enabled. You can set up very complex automations with HomeKit. Such as: whenever I or a family member who has an iphone is within 500 feet of the house AND its dark outside, THEN turn on the laundry room lights and hallway lights and leave them on for like 10 minutes and turn them off. This is our evening routine to light up the pathway. I cant do any of that with IFTTT. HomeKit is good, and once you get it to work right its very stable so if I add to our devices I'm gonna be adding homekit devices. In the meantime I'm trying to learn how to code better for these automations for carplay, i'll update this thread with more stuff as I get it to work. |

It does work. As soon as I step in my car (carplay connects to my phone), the specified app is launched. The only problem is, because of the launch of the app, carplay pops up with that triggered app. But I want to just stay in the BMW Navigation map and let that triggered app open in the background. Is there a way to prevent carplay from popping up to the display?

Sounds like I need to investigate HomeKit more. I'm dabbling part time at it so haven't fully got my head around the best way to approach all of this nor what the options are. I've been using Smart Life which seems to be more agnostic
