In American homes it's very common to have bedrooms above the garage. Sleep tight hybrid and EV owners! :

Other BMWs catch fire too.

Just sayin'. Met some people that had an E46 wagon, of some age, catch fire. They replaced it with a new f31.

Cars catch fire, it's rare but it happens. Btw, just replaced my f80 with i3. Not worried at all.

I count on bmw to not have the battery fire issues that tesla has. Seeing this is pretty discouraging though. Really hope that the fire issues with electrics can be resolved

Make your garage fire safe. Garage must have concrete or brick walls, fire resistant door for 90 minutes (conection to the residental building) and another room that separates from the building with smoke resistant door. Put automatic fire alarm in the garage with sprinkler sistem. All materials in garage must be fire proof (no wood, no plastic...). Then You can sleep worry free.

My house would still burn down after those 90 minutes so I prefer building either a car port or a stand-alone garage at the back of the house, disconnected from the house. That way I can sleep tight. If it burns down, at least no one will be close to it and it will be “safe”.

Chances are your house will burn down from a domestic electrical appliance in house first. This is an irrational overreaction.
My car will sleep in the garage, hell I even have solar panels. I can find horror articles about solar panels catching fire also.

I get your point I’m also careful with all the rest I have in my home and I have sensors and all that. Fire sheet in kitchen and so on.

On the other hand I’ve got enough space for an extra garage, my wife’s car is sitting inside house now. I would put solar panels on the extra garage as well or in my back yard somewhere (flower thingies perhaps) instead of on my house’s roof.

I get your view though which is reasonable and fair enough. I’m not at ease now though since the root cause for burned out X5 45e is not known yet.

Until recently, in Belgium, primary cause of domestic housefires was the dryer ('condensatiedroogkast').
Recently this shifted towards cheap-ass chargers for phones, tablets, laptops, razors, etc as primary cause, with dryers in second place.

Solar panels themselves don't present a higher risk for a fire, it's a higher risk for firefighters and possible secondary issues during a fire.

Also, don't underestimate how many cars (ICE or other) that go up in flames. You just don't hear about them in the news, unless it's a new car/technology.

My wife works in the insurance branch. She says, if it's not a construction fault or another problem just put it in the garage. There are more high risk devices in house, like dryers. We have a fire sensor in the place where washing machines and dryers are.

You can't imagine how many homes get burned form devices you do not expect.

One of the kids bought a cheap ass iphone charger from AliExpress and it melted and almost caught fire when plugged in.
So no cheap ass electrical devices anymore. But that is also not a guarantee.

So long a 45e doesn't get toasted every week I will put it in the garage

I agree. BMW gave me assurance that the work they fix they did on the grounding cable should solve the problem. Car has always been parked in my garage - for a month now. Just added a smoke sensor to be on the safe side.

Did they mention a direct connection (cause/result) between the two?

I know BMW AG has explicitly asked their concessions not to relate the fire incident with the earth wire fix/issue.

I called my concession and they told me that the fire is not related to the batterypack in the rear or the hybrid part of the car. But they did not know the exact cause, it was still under investigation.
The fire was in the front so I also think it's not related to the hybrid part of the car.

They did not tell me it was related to the earth wire issue. There can be an issue with an earth wire and they know about the fix but all 45e's they have received did not have that issue.

Exclamation The owner of the X5 45e

Hi to all,

Many thanks to all of you who are concerned about my 3 weeks old BMW X5 G05 45e in Phytonicblue ...

I also see a lot of support and people trying to understand the cause of all this.

The first person who saw the smoke and quickly after that the fire says it started around the right-back wheel.
As you can see in the pictures there was a strong wind from the back to the front of the car. Luckely, because otherwise their would be approx. 500 children to be evacuated.

Nobody did get hurt, but the biggest problem is the 3 older cars ... the owners (colleagues of my wife) need to look for an other car with little recovering from insurance.

Well, until today, there is NO information from BMW BELUX or my insurance. They are trying to meet to investigate what's left of the car.

BMW Assistance / BMW BELUX provided me with a new X5 30d the day after for at least 2 till 3 months. After that we'll see.

The dealer already ordered the same config for me to push BMW BELUX by inserting this order as fast as possible into production.

But first I need to convince my wife to order a new one. She doesn't trust the Hybrid/battery stuff, even we are not sure to what it is related.
Even the repalcement X5 30d is standing 50m from our garage/home.
Even not using the car now, having the pre-heat system, when the other is completely frozen :-(

To be continued ...

Greetz,
Filip
