X5 XDrive 40I Exterior and interior lighting

I am in the process of buying a 2020 XDrive 40I and am contemplating on whether or not to get the laser lights. Is it worth the extra money or are the standard LED lights okay? Also looking at the Executive package but there are some features I don't need. There is the ambient lighting on the sunroof. Looks really cool but you have to get the Executive package for this option. Anyone have the sunroof with the lighting and how do you like it? Last question and I have researched and can't find the answer. Does the X5 come with illuminated door sills?

Majority of X5 owners upgrade from the 552 standard Adaptive Full LED to 5AZ Icon Adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight for aesthetics and functionality.

5AZ versus 552 aesthetics and functionality include:
1. BMW Icon DRLs versus U-shaped DRLs (looks visually similar to VW Atlas)
2. Functional inner and outer LED & Laserlight projection units versus only outer functioning and dummy inner units on standard
3. For USA markets, 5AZ includes cornering lights versus no cornering lights on 552
4. Full length eyebrow LED turn signals versus LED bulb turning signals
5. Frickin' LAZERS high beams LOL

Functionally both are fully adaptive low/high beam LED headlight units. Laserlight ONLY enhances the LED high beam over 37MPH and under specific ambient lighting conditions - eg. really dark. The majority of the time you'll see LED low and high beams in city and suburb driving.

Based on headlight testing - 5AZ provides better light distribution over 552 most likely due to using two functional inner and outer LED projection units.

Here's some night time ambient lighting details of 5AZ on my X5. You can see ambient lights up in the blue X. The reflector on the far left is the LED cornering light which turns on when cornering or steering angle greater than 15 degree - eg to light up dark sweeping curves. The LED projection upper units are low beans and what's not shown are the high beam lower units.

I personally skipped the Executive Package this time but will most likely option it when lease is up in 2023. Like yourself there are features I don't really need, but if only I could have individually optioned Drive Recorder and Skylounge.

Yes the X5 does come with illuminated door sills. There are 5 illuminated sills types:

1. X5 - xLine models
2. BMW Individual - xLine models optioned with extended Merino or full Merino interiors
3. ///M - xDrive 40i M Sport and 2019 xDrive 50i M Sport models
4. ///M50i, ///M50d - M50i/d models
5. X5 ///M, X6 ///M - upcoming ///M models

Is this a known fact? I for one did not upgrade.

It's a collected generalization from many owners who upgraded to 5AZ in the G05 forum. Another reason while misinformed, is that low and high beams are laser lighting.

But overall since the inception of the G05 forum, owners have upgraded because it's the newness, it's cool, it's lasers, it's got two working projectors versus one and for Bimmer enthusiasts, it's design is iconic and connects with previous generation BMW headlight designs.

You probably have reasons for not upgrading.

If you have Extended Merino Leather on an xLine, the illuminated door sill says "Individual" instead of "X5"? That's neat. Never knew that.

I never knew that. I have “Individual” on my sills with the Merino Extended, but I assumed it was because I custom ordered it, as opposed to buying it off the lot.

It's been awhile and I've lost track of all the various photos since G05 forum inception but yep. xLines are like unicorns in the forum since there's so many M Sport photos

Hah! I'll be sure to break the trend and post many photos of our xLine once I pick it up.

Thanks for all the information. This really helps. Looks like Laser lights are a go!

From my review of dealer stock in Australia, majority of stock ordered in didn't go for laser lights. And from what I've seen on the road, LED seems more popular probably due to cost.

552 is not standard (as in 'included in all produced G05s') although it is included in US models (hence the option code for it).
