Rear Cross Trafic Alert
I apologize if this question may have been raised in another thread ( I could not find it). I went to a local BMW dealer today and wanted to see how Rear Cross Traffic Alert works on 2019 X5 and X7 (should be standard on both, as far as I understand). We could not make it work on X7 and it was the same for X5. We had a car drive by perpendicular to us and a person walk behind us, but no audible alerts were heard. Parking sensors were activated in some cases, but that was it. Does anyone have experience with this feature working and if so, how does it alert you of rear cross traffic. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have not seen it work on my x5. With our audi the brakes come on so we cant back in front of someone if we dont see them. With the bmw i have had some close calls but no warning or brakes. I now drive assuming none of the safety features work.I am hopeful a software fix in the future will work but currently i see no corner lights, no frontal warning, and no pedestrian detection and no forward safety.
I dont think i would buy an x5 or 7 until they could demonstrate the features work as advertised. Its been suggested i take it to the dealer but reading the forums i have not heard of a solution. |

I have had the alert come,up a few times but not the braking..probably because I braked prior to the auto brake.

Interesting. I think that this is a definite concern, because safety issues are very important; and if a safety feature is standard, but does not always work or does not work at all, it's something that BMW has to be concerned with. I'm still considering X5 and X7, but I'm definitely going to check if that feature is working. Thanks for the input.

These alerts were a big deal to me, but they don't seem to work as advertised . It's a bummer. Someone is gonna get tagged and then BMW c-suite will get taken to the hoop.

The parking sensor system is poorly engineered. The system activates very late. It doesn’t detect narrow objects like poles well. Cross traffic alert does t work at all. I still don’t understand the logic behind having them turn on and off automatically. Why can’t they just be always on like every other manufacturer.

Its funny bmw is able to keep selling these cars using the same website information and people keep buying them but this stuff flat isn't turned on.Seems like bmw would put a stop sale on these. I am happy with the way the car drives and sounds so if i can just keep my expectations in the early 2000 era all is good. I will say the auto drive works well. Actually much better then our 2017 q7 but no safety features on the bmw will come even close to our audi.

It works. But not how you expect it...
Apparently it only works if you are backing up from tight space with limited view. Think blind spot. If your are backing up wide open driveway.. Bmw expects you to use your eyes. And yes... I hate is as well... my old ford did better than that. |

Mine came on at the Costco parking lot while backing out. The screen also glows red to indicate whichever side the vehicle is approaching. I was surprised because it had never came on before.

Oh well that's good. Perhaps I've never encountered the right circumstances to activate it.

Generally to get the beeping you need to be moving. Works best if you use the camera icon panorama button if you have 3D view for cross traffic alert. Designed to see where you can't see. Works forward or reverse need to be pulled .up close to intersection to get the flashing red bars on side of screen or red lower corner in pdc. If you are back more than a car length or so or not moving you won't get any warnings. Probably thinks you are far enough away from danger. I personally like the way BMW cross alert works not beeping constantly at you.

Maybe a stupid question but did you put it in reverse when you were testing it? I have the feature on my M550i and works great.

yes, it was in reverse and we tried being in reverse and stationary ; and also moving in reverse. What troubled me was that when the car was in reverse and stationary and the person was walking behind the car (perpendicular to reversing direction), no alerts of any kind appeared. In my car (2014 Lexus) this triggers an alert.

Rear cross traffic
We have a 2020 X7 that we purchased in Jan 2020. I have had the car in twice, worked with the genius once. Rear cross traffic doesn’t work. The dealership/service Dept says it works the way it is designed, they say BMW engineers don’t want it to be overly sensitive - I say whats the point of having it. We have never had an audible alert yet, and one extremely close call when I was backing out of a drive way. We need a class action lawsuit!

On my F15 it caught both of those scenarios. Also the change from Yellow to Red indicator is troublesome for me as I can barely see the indication in red (partially color blind to red). Overall it is a step backwards to previous gen implementation. |

i have a f15 and never got a cross traffic warning. I frequently get it on the g05, whenever I park in our garage. We have a two car garage but there's a separate door for each garage, so the door is one car sized. With all the crap I have in the garage, when I pull in, I close the mirrors and try to put the car as far to the right as possible so I can get out of it with relative ease on the left.
I use backup assistant to back out of the garage and if I pulled in too close to the right side, the car will suddenly jerk to a stop and i'll get an alert in idrive. While I havent gotten it from another car, it definitely works in cramped quarters when it thinks you're going to hit something. |

i can confirm also that my 2020 X5 shows no visual sign not any audible sound for rear or front cross traffic even though it's equipped with driver assistance plus.
This is after ensuring that the cross traffic is checked in teh settings...... I took it to the dealer today and I am awaiting their feedback. |

Mine doesn't seem to work either. I verified it is on and on the numerous occasions I've backed out of parking spaces with cars approaching, it's never gone off. I have the front one as well, and that, too, never goes off.
