Porsche Taycan Lays Down a 7:42 Nurburgring Lap

Quote:
A pre-production Taycan was able to lay down a lap of 7:42 on the 12.8-mile circuit, piloted by Porsche test driver Lars Kern. That makes it quicker than cars like the Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon, the Volvo S60 Polestar, and the Honda Civic Type R, but slower than the Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R, BMW M5, and the Porsche's own Panamera Turbo.
Porsche Taycan 7m42s

Not bad for something that weights probably close to 5000 lbs...

I don't know how hard they were pushing but top speed was a little underwhelming? Around 255. Maybe that's in line with others, just curious.

It's like watching a silent movie...

Not that surprising it is slower than a few cars. Considering... electric car's advantage is hitting their speed far faster than ICE cars.

It feels so damn strange to not hear anything from a Porsche car.

In other words, on pace with a 997 GT3 or gen 1 GT4.

Probably the most consequential lap time in generations of 'ring testing, if we're being honest.

Interesting to see that the Taycan batteries have the stamina to complete a full nordschleife lap. The Tesla model S attempts I've seen all had to give up because the car went into some kind of limp mode due to excessive strain on the batteries.

One company has been making autobahn terrors for decades. One builds cars in tents. Is it really all that surprising?

yeah, a porsche that wouldn't be able to complete a nordschleife lap without hassle would be a scandal.

When the Taycan hits the market it will be the fastest production EV on the nordschleife.
The previous record dates back 6(!) years to the mercedes SLS electric drive (which was sold as a production vehicle), that hit a time back then of 7:56.
In that scope its somewhat disappointing that in 6 years only 14sec of progression has been made, especially since this is a technology/product that is in an extreme technical innovation era.
I think virtually all other classes of cars have made more progression in that timespan on Nordschleife laptimes.

Now how many years until EV overtakes ICE for overall 4-door record?

AMG GTS 4-door did a 7:25.

Nature of an electric powertrain. My old Fiat 500e had a top speed of 88mph.

Is Porsche using a multi geared transmission? I like giving sub P90D Teslas a hard time over 70mph with my lowly GTI. They always seem unpleasantly surprised that their one speed car isn't very quick at higher speeds. I'm guessing Porsche will use at least two gears to make up for this.

How many more laps could it do after that one? How long for a full recharge?

Man this is honestly my biggest and greatest disappointment with EV and why I hope some sports car will remain ICE or hybrid but only the future will show that.

And manual transmissions but that seems to be going away anyways.

If I had to guess, it can probably do 2 laps total, tops.

I've seen Tesla Model 3 Performance able to complete a 20 minute session driving in track mode at speed at Buttonwillow. They're capable of approximately 25 minutes, which translates to about 2 full laps at the Ring (more high speed sections means using more electrons to overcome drag). A full charge takes about 25 minutes at a near by supercharger station.

While they're not quite "there yet" for people who demand track performance...Really, how many people track their performance cars? 0.5%? 0.05%? When they're far superior at 99.95% of everything else you'd ask a car to do?

Buy a 911 GT3RS to go along with the Taycan if numbers of 'Ring laps is your primary concern, IMO.

Thanks for the info, but no thanks for the unsolicited opinions.

I really don't care about 'ring times. It is the most overrated and irrelevant number thrown around in car marketing nowadays.

I do care if they mentioned how long the battery lasts going full bore like that and how long it would take to recharge when depleted.

Quoted top speed is 250km/h.

The noise (or lack of) was interesting in that you definitely had a good feel for how hard he was pushing the tires.

There was a recent video where a journalist did 0-124-0 26 times in a row without a performance drop. I think on a single charge, because they mention "in a row".

Charge time @ 350kW is 0-80% in 15 mins, @ 150kW 0-80% in 40 mins.
