Somethings not right with my wipers, turn them selves on when I use a turn signal

I discovered with clean glass, clean sensors, dry 90° outside, on the freeway, if I make a lane change with my change lane indicator on my windshield wipers turn on!

What the hell???

This is just a guess...you may have a loose connection somewhere. When moving a switch, it actually is sending a message to a computer that then sends another message to the device's computer that tells it what to do. If there's a loose connection, the message could be corrupted and who knows what might happen.

Did you pay extra for that feature? Geez, this makes no sense and when things don't make sense, you do the reboot dance.. .. may work, may not.. .. somewhere around the 25-30 sec mark, the display will go black as it reboots, just like a puter does. Have your key with you, press the Start button (without pressing the brake pedal), then do the reboot.

Thanks for all that. I actually have done the reset 3x. I really figured it would fix this canbus issue. So my wife calls me special all the time, looks like I am now!

This is like Twilight Zone stuff, they are on completely different stalks! But it is what it is...well if a software reset didn't do the trick, I guess its time for a dealer visit, this is one for their books! Just curious, how many miles were on the car when you first noticed this?

Is this repeatable or “intermittent” no pun intended

I’ve only got 29,000 miles on my 2020 here. As far as repeatable goes I would say it’s 50% of the time you make a lane change turning the wheel will just set off the windshield wipers on low. Sometimes it does it randomly and sometimes it only does one sweep.

I dare say I had the car coded and that was 5000 miles ago.

Coding should have had no effect on this.

Wait, this is the first time you said "turning the wheel". So are you saying that simply moving the turn signal indicator arm does not trigger the wipers? They only trigger when you physically turn the steering wheel?

Most of the time it's a lane change or right turn. But have had it out of the blue...but hard to say a slight steering wheel change simply driving down the road might be all it needs.

I repaired electronics for a living with some can bus. I could only think of the Anti-dazzle programming or windshield sensor for rain as a possible can bus trigger. (One for the steering wheel, the other for the wipers)

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem with my 2022 X5, starting at around 17,000 miles. Same general circumstances - changing lanes, mostly at highway speeds while accelerating, but occasionally on local roads. It seems like the length of time the turn signal is on determines the length of time the wipers stay on.

Exact symptoms: highway speed, changing lanes with indicators on, wipers go on about half the time. It's usually turns itself off after a few swipes but not always. Last week, they went on without using turn signals or changing lanes. Not of fan of electrical gremlins.

It could be as simple as a loose connection. Almost none of the switches in a BMW directly power the different functions...they're a low-voltage switch input to a logic circuit, and a computer actually sends a serial message to the device to tell it what to do. So, it could be various parts. The service people can tap into the computer system to see what messages are floating around.

Use the stalk on the left, not the right.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist…)

The same issue happened to my 2021 X5 at ~25k miles.

The wipers turned themselves on 4 times last week when I turned on the blinkers or while I was driving straight at highway speed.

Rebooting iDrive didn’t help. The dealer found an error code to replace the steering column switch cluster.
