ACC radar on non-ACC car?

It doesn’t seem like Adaptive Cruise Control is currently an option for ‘24 X5 40i, but all of the cars I see have the radar piece below the front bumper area. What does this piece do if it is not used for ACC? I hope BMW wouldn’t just put a placeholder item where a functional part should be. Thanks all!

So--the vehicle doesn't have DAP? Perhaps they are still using that space for parking sensors.

I seem to remember reading someone here said all LCI come with the radar but if DAP is not optioned, it is not connected to anything and won't function.

You may be able to pay for ACC at a later date via connecteddrive. BMW did that for cars with the radar in Europe pre LCI.

Yes, no DAP optioned and it still has the space for a radar. Perhaps it also functions as the forward collision warning system?

In the US, when DAP is not optioned then there is nothing behind that cover. Some models put the LIDAR behind there and then offer ACC (not full DAP) as a subscription but they did not do that with the X5.

Interestingly the dealer is telling me I could add the DA Plus (which has ACC) on the 50e through Connected Drive if I don't get the DA Pro Package. They've said it's a $40/m subscription or a one time fee of $900.

https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...stant_plus.pdf

Honestly this is enough for me if it's true. Is there a way to verify before I order?

Everything we have seen says that ACC is not available for the X5 by subscription. Folks have looked at the vehicle and there us nothing behind the cover. Driving Assistant Plus likely requires a different KAFAS so that won't be available.

Do yourself a favor and order DAP, you definitely will not regret it. Not only for the driving assistance features but also the extra safety features

I know I've been wishy washy on this, but its hard in my mind to justify it when it adds $10k to the price of the vehicle since I won't be able to get the CO or Fed rebate if I include it on the build.
I'm $555 over the limit. Very frustrating.

But if I can't at least get the plus version, then yeah, I'll have to add it and suck up the loss.

We thought it was going to be available by subscription when the LCI was first introduced but all reports say there us nothing behind the sensor and no subscription is available. Maybe your dealer can verify it for you and get something in writing. Perhaps something is changing or we have had bad information.

Yeah I emailed asking if we can get 100% confirmation one way or the other b/c I won't buy it once it gets here if it doesn't - and I dont want to go through the process and then have to walk away.

Thanks for the help, I know I've been a pain in the ass.

You haven't been a pain at all. Let us know what they say. That bad part is that you wont be able to subscribe to it, if it was available, until after you buy it. If they are wrong you would already own it when you found out.

How do you fit a US license plate on the front bumper without blocking the radar plate? Seems the license plate has to go to the right side in the tow piece.

The way I did it was to put the front plate on my workbench in the garage. It's still there.

It, and the bracket, is designed for a centered front plate to not block the radar.

It is not just the radar unit but also a totally different master brake assembly as well as software. ACC cannot be added is my understanding.

You will have to provide documentation on that as that is the first we have heard about different brakes/system with ACC. According to the tech docs that is not the case.

There is a difference between the camera that is used for ACC and the one used for DAP.

Doesn't "frontal Collision warning/avoidance", which is standard equipment, use the radar?

No, it uses the KAFAS camera on non-DAP vehicles.
