M sport exhaust break-in period?

I’ve heard that there is no break in for the ‘24 40i engine (is this accurate?), but should any care be taken when the M sport exhaust is optioned? Part of the M sport pro package. Thanks all!

I think your user manual will beg to differ... afaik it says 1200miles for all models

check your manual. i'm pretty sure the break-in period is 1200 miles.

i think you meant you optioned the M Performance exhaust. M Sport is a model "look", like the xLine

That is a different option. The exhaust option in the M Sport Professional package is called 1MA M Sport exhaust system.

It was at least in the UK.

Here, all pre LCI X6 came with the M Sport exhaust. It was an option on pre LCI X5. I have it on my X6 and it is certainly louder than the standard exhaust on my G30 5 series with same B58 engine.

Pre-LCI X6s in Canada came with it since M Sport package was standard on them.

I've never bothered to look closely at the exhaust of my G05, but you'd be surprised at how many BMW exhausts contain moving parts.

Agreed that there's no obvious reason for a break-in period, though.

Not quite the same thing but my 50e exhaust is seemingly a quite a bit louder than my 40i, especially at start up. It’s almost like they’ve put the M Sport exhaust on the 50e as standard, which I doubt. I don’t have the M Sport Pro pack so it’s not come from there. And I also don’t think M Sport exhaust is even included if you do have the M Sport Pro pack on the 50e

Regardless it’s louder than my previous 40i which is somewhat inconsistent with the very quiet operation of the 50e on electric, when the engine kicks in at low speeds or putting into Sport it’s quite a surprise how loud it is!

For the X5 it wasn't. It was standard on the M50i but not available on the 40i. For the X6 it was part of the M Sport Package for the 40i and standard on the M50i.

That's interesting.

Just the other day actually I was wondering how the 50e sounded when the ICE is running. I presumed it would be quiet, but obviously not.

Yes, the sport exhaust for the 40i as part of the M sport pro package. Is it true the car needs 1200mi break-in? This means less than 4k rpm or are there other guidelines to follow? In that case, the exhaust would also receive that period as would every other part of the car. But a few sales associates have told me no break-I needed, hence my inquiry here!

As is often the case, the sales associates are wrong. It has a 1200 mile break-in period with restrictions on RPMs and speed. It could be they were thinking about a break-in service, that is not needed on the G05 models.

Yeah, the flap. I associate it with an interesting era for BMW where even base level cars had little features like that that reminded you that you were in something 'special'.

Oh that flap exists for a long time. My 2003 e39 has it. The goal is to maintain exhaust flow velocity at low flow rate (usually low rpm) for exhaust scavenging. Contrary to people want to keep in open for louder exhaust, keeping it open at low rpm increase resistance.

There is and should be a brake in period for engine, transmission, transfer case, diff, turbo … fast precise moving parts. I still don’t see why exhaust even mentioned here. No precision moving parts like the former in exhaust system. Nothing to break in there. If your car is 1 year old with 10k miles, and you swap oem m sport exhaust, you will not need to break that in

Thanks TB. What does “ brake disc and brake pads must be run in” mean? Don’t apply excessive force and use them as little as possible? Or use them often so they form together nicely? I definitely wouldn’t want brake noise/squeeks.

Do some hard braking when possible to do so.

I think the point is to avoid hard braking during the first 300mi, and then do it if break noise appears. It’s worded confusingly but some others have said light braking or no braking under full load is what is instructed. What kind of damage could occur if one brakes hard during the first few miles?

No damage at all. It is referring to not having the full braking power for the first 310 miles or so.

Edit: Here are some articles on bedding the brakes: https://oembimmerparts.com/blogs/new...g-in-procedure
