Driver Profile question

hi all, I have 2024 X5 with iDrive8.5.

I have BMW ID and profile setup. How do I create second profile for my wife? does she have to create a BMW ID and then switch ID when she is driving?

She can use guest as a profile but to save custom settings for her you just need to register a BMW profile for her, log in to that in the X5 and tie it to the second key fob. That way driver's seat position (just press memory #1), HUD, and other specific settings are automatically set for her while using the fob.

I think if you're both in the vehicle and both of you have your fobs, it can get a little messy as it does not appear that the vehicle uses your position (i.e., which seat) you're in, but maybe the first fob it detects...so play with it a little and see who it 'welcomes' to get it to have the proper profile. Curious, if you learn for sure, let us know.

Yes, even though she never drives the car, my wife keeps a fob in her purse. If she gets in the car first, it will default to Guest profile and stay that way until I manually change it to mine.

About to try this, to confirm, you are saying it requires second BMW ID to achieve this, can not add second driver profile under same BMW ID?

Each driver profile must have their own BMW account.

Yes, and the first one established in the car becomes the primary. However, there isn't any limitations by default to a secondary user outside of they cannot create the digital key.

As per TurtleBoy's reply yes it's a requirement. The upside is you can install the MyBMW app on your wife's phone and use her account to log in. Technically you could do so with Jason at your account but now that you'll be creating hers seperately for a driver profile in the car you both can have different profile pictures, etc.

Technology for technology sake. Our '21 Durango allowed you to set up multiple profiles without having to have the app and an account. Much easier that way. Also, we don't want to have to figure out which keyfob we want to use based on who's driving. PITA.

You can switch profiles simply by entering the PIN associated with the particular account, so it doesn't matter which fob you use...however, the fob will load that particular account provided it is used as the driver recognition

No, the primary and secondary users are designated online in MyGarage.

Hmm. The car was a gift. The buyer bought it, and has the primary user status. It was sighed over to me, but I don't have access to the person who created the primary account. Weird, I know. I just want to make sure I don't lock myself out of the primary user account

You can link both keys to your profile then it won’t matter which key is present. If she doesn’t drive it, or not very often, then use the same profile and setup the 2nd memory position for her seats etc. You

Does Digital Key work for both primary and secondary users with the need for independent profiles or on same profile on MyBMW app?

I'm no expert on this as we just picked up our X5 from the dealer today and this is our first BMW so steep learning curve on the tech, but The product specialist that helped us setup the car had me setup the digital key on my personal iphone and then share it with my wife's phone via messages/text. I also shared with my work iphone so the digital key is now on all three devices.

When we are together, I'm not sure if the car is picking up the key fobs or one of the cell phones first? I took just one of my phones this evening for a quick drive and it kept prompting me to select a profile when I got in the car. Not sure how to associate a profile automatically with the iphone's digital key? If anyone knows, please share!

Hopefully each user has their own digital key associated with their MyBMW profile. I have a Samsung S23+ and my wife has an iphone 14...

Right now we just have a single BMW ID (me), and we've set my wife's seat memory to #1 and myself to #2. The way we're used to it working (E93 & E70) is whomever unlocked the car (or whichever key was detected first) would recall that driver's seat memory. Is that still the case?

Do you really need to setup a second driver ID / account? What are the benefits of doing so, or what can't you do if you just have a single ID? Our E70 wasn't nearly this complicated.

I havent tested on a second phone, but when i go to my bmw id profile, i can see what the name of the phone my id is linked too. Everytime i used my phone the correct profile comes up. Just like the key fob, you still need to match the digital key with a profile.

Key fob #1 is assigned to a profile which both you and your wifes uses?nothing wrong with that.

Advantage of using key fob #2 with a new profile is you can have different settings more than just seat configuration. Maybe you like your dashboard or center display to look differently that what your wife prefers, or different idrive settings. Differently profiles lets you save these so you wont have to change anything after your wife drives it. Now if both you changes no settings or both prefers everything exactly the same way then there will be no point for 2nd profile/fob to be used.

I stopped by and spoke to a genius last night. Since the profile was set up under another person, giving them primary user status, I had to have the Genius remove that person as the primary user, and put me as the primary user. If I had simply added myself as an additional user and deleted the primary, I would not have become the primary user.

Cliffs: only BMW can assign a new primary user.
