2024 X5 M60i (LCI)

Yesterday I locked up an allocation for a MY24 X5 M60i (LCI). Although BMW USA hasn't officially announced anything yet; I've been reading enough to feel confident about what's coming. I am being told I will have the 1st allocation at my local dealer excluding the demo dealer unit, which I am told they can't sell. I am sure I could have negotiated better ($1,000 off MSRP plus any available rebates), but I want the guaranteed allocation more than anything. I was all set to buy a MY23 X5 M50i, until I started reading about the MY24 LCI coming. (M50i to M60i, S68 engine, iDrive 8, Etc.) I plan to keep you all abreast of timing and welcome any comments to help me through the process especially when it comes time to build. This will be my first BMW, and I must say....I'm pretty darn excited about what's to come.

So here's the question: What's everyone's best guess as to when I can begin my build?

Your first BMW and you are jumping on one of the first LCI models? It is likely that there will be issues with the first LCI cars after they retool to build LCI model.

Are you saying it's typical for the first LCI's to have issues? Can you be more specific?

Uh it's typical for first year of a new model from any manufacturer to have some issues. Then they slowly work out the kinks in subsequent years. Though this is just a refresh so there may not be any issues.

History of LCI models shows the opposite

With a new engine and a new iDrive? I wouldn't bet on this iteration of LCI

Good point! The X5 is one of the last (if not the very last) to get the new iDrive so I'm hoping BMW has worked out the kinks. The S68 engine isn't new either is it?

It is not about whether the engine (S63, not S68) or iDrive is brand new. It is about the new package, i.e. how it will work in X5 LCI.

And absolutely, everything will be sorted under warranty. I just prefer to stay away from dealers as much as possible.

Are you sure? @TurtleBoy who seems to know what he's talking about has said the M60i will be getting the S68 engine on a number of occasions. Can someone else clarify?

Let me take this back, looks like the LCI X7 is having significant quality issues…strange…being similar to the X5 could trickle over..

Whether LCI reduce buyer’s confidence is probably very personal. I respect your thought on the concern. But how does “first bmw” play a role here. If LCI is really more prone to issue, risk isn’t going to be any less if I know several bmws.

Btw, LCI isn’t a completely refreshed new car. It is a refinement of the current model. Typically they come out better. They are also more desirable in used market as the generation ages.

I personally won’t worry. First there is warranty as other mentioned. And if timing is right, you need a car, buy what is available. Otherwise there is always a reason for the next one in 1-2 years

Coming from owning 15 new bmw never buy the first year. Wait for the second or third.

Maybe that MHEV system will fail or maybe not; there will probably be no major issues. Most likely there will just be people complaining about the use of a MHEV system and the LCI interface e.g. lack of physical buttons, distracted driving etc.

Probably best to just anticipate the joy of configuring your order. Hopefully the dealership has some idea of when you can place the order. I kept reading spring time without mention of a specific month.

No need to worry about it in my opinion but we all have different worries and fears.

The Configurator likely won't be updated until April but allocations for them will likely be issued in late Feb/early March and the pricing guides should also come out around then.

Its not exactly a "new engine"

Its a build up from the S63. BMW rarely makes a "new engine" they just add on and upgrade the previous designs.

Even the B58 isn't a "new engine" but its upgrades over the N54 and changed enough that its a new code instead of just a technical update.

I explained myself in one of the posts above. This is a new engine in X5. Together with a new iDrive it may result in some problems.

If somebody is willing to take a risk, it is not my business. I prefer to have somebody else being a beta test driver. I will be ordering 50e as I convinced my wife to switch from. 5 series. I will wait 6-9 months after the launch. Discounts will be higher and issues will be less likely.

Very cool. Can't help with the delivery date, but I am sure you'll love the X5 and welcome to the madness!

In regards to buying the first year of a model or LCI I wouldn't worry. We bought the first year the M2 was introduced (2016) and got the second M2 the dealership sold. Besides a rear differential issue recall we have had no problems with the car and I haven't heard of any.
