Distinct Latching Sound When Shutting Doors

In most modern cars, from my 340i down to my dad's Civic, the doors shut with a pleasing thunk.

In the X5 the doors shut with a muted but distinct click along with a thunk, particularly from the outside. I believe this is the door latch. It sounds cheap, not becoming of a $70k+ car. And not all doors sound the same, for example the right front (passenger) door is more pronounced than the others.

Ours was a January build. Does anyone else have this issue or had it fixed?

Just the other day the in-law's commented on how nice the doors sounded when shutting.... I think they feel great.. I have read that sometimes the latch might not be at the correct torque from factory. You might want to do a quick pop in to the dealer to get that checked. I do not know the spec they need to be at.

Do you have soft-close option? Perhaps the added sounds you hear is the soft close feature?

No, we don't have that.

Could you record a video so that we can compare it to our doors?

If something was wrong, I doubt all the doors were affected.

Not sure it would come across in a video but I could try. They all do it but to different degrees. The worst is def. the RF, second is LF, third is RR, fourth LR.

The doors were designed with a soft-close luxury experience in mind. They are also balanced and made from aluminum so the old days of needing to use force to close the doors are gone. The closing sound is very high end modern. Slamming doors are for plebeians. I don’t believe any Honda gets (or will ever get) soft-close doors. The issue with living with soft-close doors is using other cars that don’t have and never closing the doors hard enough. Your brain gets calibrated to work a certain way.

Do you have it set somehow to lock the door when you close it? I have mine set to unlock and lock all four doors when I walk away with the key, but I haven’t noticed any annoying sound like that when closing a single door.

My car was delivered June 7.

Sorry but you're way off base. First we don't have the soft close doors. Second, I don't slam doors and this is NOT an expensive sound or feel, not to mention it's inconsistent. It's the expensive sound/feel that has been gradually been working its way to lesser cars for years now, not the other way around.

Unless video posted, comments are guesswork.
I'm satisfied with closing sound....solid. Same as my last Porsche, same as MB. But the days of the "Bank Vault" closures (I'm dating myself) appear to be gone. There was a certain solidity to the German manufacturers door closing that was amazingly solid. Last on BMW was the E36. It was most apparent when window was down. Cost / weight must make this prohibitive today.

I don't get the benefit of the "soft close" option, since the owners will usually be the only users that are aware of the "feature". Just something to go wrong down the road with no (imo) benefit, and zip retained value.

Funny, been driving BMW's for many years and always enjoyed the solid "thud" sound with just a short 'ting' at the end, like someone tapping a bell to signify its closed. When inside the car with all windows and sunroof closed, our ears would feel the pressure.
Along comes our 2011 X3 and all that changed...the doors are super easy to close with the lightest touch and sound tinny and cheap. Everyone who has closed the door has commented....Hey, why do these doors close like a cheap car?
I've never spent the time to compare the old vs new door/latch, I mean it is what it is but we do miss the old sound, it was a sound of perceived quality.
