Anyone regret not having Parking Assistance Package?

My 2012 X5 has parking sensors and surround view cameras that provide a birds eye view of the car while parking. I find this enormously helpful while parallel parking in San Francisco and other situations like hooking up a trailer. These feature doesn't appear to be standard or common on the G05; you have to order the Parking Assistance Package ($700) which adds Surround View w/ 3D View (birds eye and 3D surround view accessible in car or remotely via smartphone), Parking Assistant Plus (automatic parking), and Active Park Distance Control (audible alerts tied to ultrasonic parking sensors front and rear).

There are some nice X5s in stock in the Bay Area that don't have the Parking Assistance Package. I am hesitant to compromise on this one since I use it so much. (I can go without the automatic parking gimmick but the cameras and sensors are very useful.)

What is the parking experience like on the X5 without the Parking Assistance Package? (Do any of the features I mentioned above actually come standard?)

Did anyone here not get the Parking Assistance Package and regret it?

I wouldn't recommend getting an X5 without parking assistant package. It makes a HUGE difference and lets you park a very large car with absolute ease. The camera system in the G05 X5's is probably the most advanced of any carmaker out there, so you're getting a bargain for only $700. The car parking itself is just an extra perk (which we actually use often), but the surround view cameras alone are well worth it. The standard without this package is just sensors and a rear camera.

I love the parking assistant! I would never get an X5 without this. Totally worth it! I use it all the time.

It's useful, but I think it's another feature that lets drivers forget how to drive. Knowing the dimensions of your vehicle, no matter how large, should be requisite knowledge. It's definitely nothing I miss when I drive other SUVs that don't have it. Cool feature, though.

I have the parking package and I find it useful, but I'm not sure it's a "bargain". Sure, it's not a ripoff, but it's just a few low resolution cameras and software stitching the picture together. For the functionality, it's definitely worth the cost. For the parts and development, not really.

Agree you're definitely not getting a 4k camera system, but the quality of the G05's cameras is far superior to a lot of automakers. It has its kinks, as with all features, but for the added convenience you'll use it for on a daily basis, I'd say $700 is still a bargain (especially when you compare it side-by-side to other features that may not bring as much value to your everyday driving, like glass controls ($650), acoustic glass ($600), Harman Kardon ($875), etc.). IMO.

Its a good feature to have. I don't use often and tend to park myself but it has saved few times in tight spots where I would have taken extra time to park or completely ignored the spot thinking my car won't park in that space.

I have it and love it, I also have cars that don't have it, considering what we're paying for these cars I got mine fully loaded except for night vision and massaging seats because I just figured all or nothing. I definitely appreciate the 360 view but haven't used the auto park feature yet.

I think with cameras being so common on even the cheapest vehicle it would seem odd to even consider going without them. They should be standard equipment.

I agree. It would make sense for automatic parking or even the remote/smartphone surround view to be optional but to make undercamera mirrors an option for a $70K-$100K vehicle in 2020 is ridiculous.

Can I offer a different perspective.
I stopped using the auto park feature after I discovered the system does not recognise painted parking lines. It only recognises and aligns to other parked cars or walls.
So if you are reverse parking and the car(s) beside you is not parked straight, you will also not park straight in your parking spot. You have to cancel out of the system and straighten up yourself.
In addition - I sometimes have to park in spots which the system says are too small to park in. So - again I find myself manually parking in spots, which the systems says is too small for my car.
The system is far from perfect and has these limitations.

Interesting.... I tried out the parking feature in an almost empty parking lot this morning and it did not notice any of the lines. Maybe this is why.

As stated previously, the car will not recognize lines on the pavement for parking spots. If you drive down the line of an empty parking lot the car will NOT identify a parking space. It will only identify a parking space if there is a car/wall on either side of the parking space.

Stupid design in my opinion. However, that being said, I believe there thinking is that if there are no other cars or walls around why do you need the autonomous capabilities of the vehicle to help you park? There's nothing to hit/squeeze between in an empty parking lot.

It's still worth the 0.08 of 1% of the MSRP. I'd get it every time.

The one feature that I didn't expect I'd use but now I actually use it on a daily basis and I sing its praises is the backup assistant. Getting out of the garage is made so incredibly easy with that feature, it would be hard to go back to a car without it.

I got it for the birds eye cameras primarily but love this feature too. Very cool.

I think it includes drive recorder which could come in handy in an accident.

Counterpoint, I did not get it on my G06. I did have a loaner with the parking package, so I've been able to try it out, and I thought all the extra cameras were cool and all, but I back into most parking spaces and a camera and mirrors are all I've ever needed (really just mirrors, I barely even look at the backup camera and the view out the back of a X6 is NOT generous).

So, answering the subject question, I do not regret not having gotten it.

I have it and would have hated my x5 without it. My garage barely fits my x5 and I need to fold the mirrors to drive in. I use the auto backup to back out with the mirrors folded.

My only complaint is that it is very dim and hard to see surroundings when I am parking in the indoor lot at work. Anyone know how to make that brighter without making every thing else brighter?

I echo many's thought here. I too have this feature, but I hardly use it. It was taking too long to auto detect a parking spot. I do used the camera to help me avoid curb rash for my wheels though.

My thoughts: I think you hit the nail on the head. If there are no cars next to where you want to park, who needs a parking assistant? In terms of it not abiding by painted parking lot lines, well, I've never heard of a parking lot painted line doing any damage to a car If you are squeezing in between two parked cars and one or both are parked crooked in reference to the parking lot lines and the X5 puts you in that spot without hitting either of them but is not parallel to the lines, then it has done its job.

I would personally NOT buy a vehicle that doesn’t have full capabilities in this regard.

Invaluable.

Most other tech is fun, but not necessary.

I don't think you need the exec package to get drive recorder. My 2022 has it with Parking Assistance Package and no exec.

The package is a nice add. Since the X5 is much larger than my previous car, I found myself using the 360 cam to make sure I wasn't accidentally parking too close to the white lines in parking spots (I'd hate to be the guy taking up two spots).
