The lights are on but no one is home

Just came outside to put the trash out and the sidelights were on (front and rear). Thought my son may have pressed the unlock button on my fob so went back in to the house to check and the keys were where I left them (out of his reach).

Then I think - whoops did I leave it unlocked? Nope the car was locked.

Through the drivers window I could see the parking light button was not illuminated and the "AUTO" button on the light cluster was green.

I unlocked the car and locked it again, the lights went off.

Did I do something as I locked the car last night to cause this?

Any way to see the battery voltage? Is this on the hidden BC menu?

As the crow flies probably less than 10ft. Will they have been on all night because the car thinks I was approaching it to unlock?

I have experienced the same but it was when I had the keys in my pocket going to the garage. The lights turn off after a while if keys are static. Mine is stored about 10 to 15 feet away.

When cleaning the car I noticed the same, too, so I removed the key from my pocket. Mine is setup without unlocking the car as I approach it but the lights still come on.

Manual says the unlocking zone is about 3 ft/1m around the door handles, so that could depend on where the key is at.

I surely have missed it but I couldn't find any documentation of the lights turning on from the custom manual (app) as the car is approached with a key.

This happens to me sometimes too. I keep the key just inside the house from the garage. If I walk out into the garage (without the key on me, still in house) and approach the X5, sometimes it lights up and starts making noises.

I think this is exactly what happened as I was approaching the car carrying the trash when I noticed the lights were on.

Well well well... I just went out with a key in my pocket, approached and walked around the car and no lights turned on! What's going on???

Its not supposed to do that. If you left your key fob in the house and its more than five feet away, but for the sake of argument lets say its 10 feet away and you walk out to the car, without the key fob, the car should not recognize anything. Its programmed to recognize the key fob, not a human...do you have a digital key in your wallet that was with you?

No, I don't. The key is definitely within 10 feet, though. I haven't tried to see if it will let me unlock the doors. I will try next time.

Ok, well the Digital Key works via NFC so it should not be capable of what your car is doing but since there are so many gremlins with the X5, I just wanted to ask.
Here is how the Comfort Touchless part is supposed to work. Sounds like another gremlin to me if your key fob is 10 feet away.

nice info here.... I have noticed that when I press the FOB Lock button (and the car is locked) and even when my car is set to unlock when approached, it does not unlock and no lights turn on until I press unlock of the FOB or touch the handle.

my guess is some of you are having that behavior kick in and not getting lights on when approaching the unlocking zone with the FOB.

My experience is that lights on when approaching is a hit and miss situation - mostly hit. Have tried to figure out cause and effect of no lights but the process is just too tedious waiting for everything to reset between attempts.

Marty, you are 100 percent correct. 10' is well beyond the range of NFC (the 1 meter range is by design).

Ir happened few times on my car too, front and rear lights won't off at all. I noticed this happens when comfort access failed to lock the car.

More info on Comfort Access (or discomfort as the case may be:)

There are many dependencies when using the touchless lock/unlock, this is from the manual. Read the functional requirements.

Garage List
I have found that my car will lock if I walk around the front or the back of the car, even if I am right next to it. The post above sorta explains that - the key fob is activated when three feet of the DOOR, so that makes sense.

The auto lock/unlock feature is cool and frustrating. When I walk around my car in the garage it unlocks/locks/unlocks. Get the garbage can on the driveway, same routine.

I get that is how it is designed and for the most part it works - still strange.

That is why I disabled auto unlock but left auto lock as I'm going away from the car. I can go around the car without it responding, except for the same observation in the OP.

When I'm washing my car (2011 X3) and have the key fob in my pocket, the doors auto lock and unlock when the hose water hits it. Drives me nuts, click, flash, click, flash, click flash but by the time I realize it, my hands are too wet to pull the key fob out out of my pocket

I would think the auto touchless unlock would be a safety concern. If my wife was coming towards the car with bags of groceries and it auto unlocked and someone wanted to take advantage of it, they could. I mean it just makes it a little easier to gain access into the car. No?

Agreed to your 2nd paragraph, that's why I disabled it.
