M50i engine same as M5?
As title states, anyone know it’s it just a detuned version?
What is different? Thanks! |

No. Different but similar. The X5M has the same engine as the M5. The M50i has the same engine as the M550i and M850i which is also different from the M5 and M8.

I haven't compared the N63TU3 engines against the S63 found in the M car's but there are some differences called out here:
http://youwheel.com/home/2016/10/21/...-5-series-g30/ That page is specific to the earlier N63TU2 (closely related to the N63TU3 engine in the M50i) but you get the idea. |

If I'm not mistaken, it's more like the M50 is the same as the 50i, tuned for more power. At least that used to be the point of the M performance models.
They're all 4.4l with turbos though, so could be the same base engine with different tuning and maybe different turbo for the ///M. |

Interesting read from the link above. So essentially the engines are both twin-scroll turbocharged 4.4L V8 engines. So by name they sound very similar.
The differences lie within the actual architecture of the engine. Long story short, the M50i, M850i etc engine is made inferior to the S63 engines of the M models on purpose. |

Typically the N or M engines come before the S engines so it’s probably more appropriate to call the S engines superior.
