X5 is CR's Top Luxury SUV

The X5 is Consumer Report's Top pick for a Luxury SUV. As we saw earlier, they did rate the 50e separate from the 40i/M60i. *

Edit: It should be noted that after browsing through some the vehicle reviews they are providing ratings by fuel type for many vehicles.

Gas scores higher but the hybrid is the “real ace” - love it. Can’t resist an opportunity to even go against their own score to recommend the electric agenda haha. Don’t get me wrong, love the 50e but just found this funny.

While I do subscribe to CR, well, to be correct, my wife does, I don't always agree with their test result analysis/opinions. However, how can I disagree with this??? I assume, since it didn't list the specific class, it's implied by the price range and physical size of the X5. Thanks for posting TB.

Looking at the introduction, they picked the X5 as the top luxury vehicle not only SUV - " the BMW X5 takes the top spot for luxury vehicles.".

They did pick the 50e as one of the top 10 PHEVs.

The reliability data is before the LCI. I believe their next data release is in April.

I'd believe the G05 was solid pre-LCI. Now, not so much. Too many changes with the LCI, even with the 40i.

The CR score for the X5 of 92 is one of the highest ever awarded for any vehicle. Kudos to BMW but I'm still not convinced to trade up. My 2019 has been a great vehicle once I sorted out some of the software glitches early on. It's a keeper as long as it stays reliable.

Yes! I can't believe how fast the year has gone.

The CR data goes through 2023 for reliability. 2023 was fantastic and 2022 not far behind. They do not have reliability data for 2024, just a prediction.

With the LCI, I'll be stunned if their prediction holds. My guess is the LCI looks more like the first or second year of the G05.

But damn, those 2023s are really doing well. May be the sweet spot for the G05.

Sorry but can you clarify your post. If the data goes through 2023, are you referring to MY 23 or calendar year - bc for 3/4s of 2023 the LCI was in production.

That is correct, the LCI's are included in that data.

I noticed this too recently and am giving a serious look at the new X5. CR gave the 2022 and 2023 MY high reliability ratings, with the 2024 MY expected to be much more reliable, which is higher than many Lexus models.

Going by wikipedia, the G05 came out in 2019, yet the 2019 has below average reliability, and the 2020 and 2021 MYs are at average. Anyone know what happened in 2022, was there a change in manufacturing or updated parts used?

Welcome to the forum. No change in hardware as that was not really a problem. The reliability hits had to do with the iDrive software and that matured as the years went on.

IDrive7 had its issues but for the most part they have been resolved. OTA software updates are still an issue IMO. YMMV.

I think CR is generally very good with car ratings. They do a ton of testing and are not beholden to advertisers. I got their top rated suv in 2017, the Audi Q7, and it's been a great car. Little long in the tooth tech wise which is why I'm considering x5.

BTW the 50e rating being lower than the 40i is solely down to the reliability. The drive score they gave the 50e was 98/100. Not sure I've seen higher.

And therein lies the dilemma. My 50e spent over 30 cumulative days at the dealership for service before it was hit while parked. If it is totaled (a real possibility), do I replace it with another?

Considering your car could be totalled OR lemoned out, I wouldn't buy another 50e. Just me.

Buy an x5 m60i, unless you’re really fuel, cost conscious. No comparison in power.

I like the X5 better than the Cayenne and Q7 - best bang for buck, and looks the best. Hopefully I'll someday have a X5 M and a 911 Turbo S...

If you enjoy the 50e and its fits your use case then I would say get another. Odds are you won't have an issue with it both from a percentage point of view and the likelihood that BMW is making headway with tracking down the root causes.

We haven't seen the testing yet but it may be very close. The 50e is as quick as the M50i and BMW says the M60i is the same as the M50i. I have a feeling the M60i is a little quicker but we will see.

Could be. I’ve driven both and the m60i seemed noticeably quicker to me. In sport mode there’s no holding it back.
