Technology Glitches

Do you find that your new X5 requires significant returns to the service department to correct many technological glitches due to the sophistication of the build components?

No doubt, there is an incredible amount of technology jammed into the vehicle. Are you irritated by anything or is your vehicle very reliable to date?

so far very reliable (knock on wood). i took delivery of it with a misaligned 360° camera view which was remedied by the dealer in a day. red light camera warnings initially moved down to instrument cluster instead of staying in the HUD as programmed, but this is rare now with most recent firmware. The one technical glitch that persists since Dec 2020 is:
• I have the 45e and default to Electric drive mode but it will start up/switch to Hybrid at random times (more often than I would like, maybe 30% of the time)

February 2019 Build. No issues other than learning how to use all the tech.

Early models had a lot of apple car play issues but these have now been sorted.
My speed camera warning also kept moving from the hud to the instrument display but that too has now stopped and the app seems very stable now.

All very minor. The vehicle itself has been very reliable.

I've been paying more attention to this and noticed that as soon as I open the door after powering the car off, it switches to Hybrid mode right before iDrive shuts down.

Most of the time when I start the car back up it goes back into Electric (my default), but I'd say maybe 15% of the time it starts in Hybrid. So far I haven't been able to find a pattern to what's causing it.

B&W speaker lights will come on as it starts to get dark, then when it gets dark they turn off and won't turn on and then all of a sudden will come on and stay lit.

Intermittent CarPlay connection issues although these are OK now and the phone (13 Pro) connects and resumes podcasts much faster than it did before.

That's all I can think of for now, there are others but will edit the post when I can remember them!

I was always bringing my X6 in for self inflicted issues but once I learned you can't use a low output trickle charger on the mild hybrid, I was good lol

This is not correct. You can use a trickle charger on the 48v mild-hybrids. There are a few threads on that. If I find one with the steps I will update with link.

Edit: This is a fairly long thread with lots of discussion but towards the end there are some steps that people took when charging and were successful.

No.
My 2009 E90 required more visits. This new car is solid.

You can google BMWs bulletin SIB 61 01 21 dated 3-2021. This version replaces January 2021. No matter what method people post for trickle charging, you potentially can damage your batteries on a mild hybrid. I did it on my 2021 X6 and had to bring it to the dealer twice to have iDrive reprogrammed because it wiped out the programming and forced my car into transport mode. The SIB provides a couple of methods to charge which appear safer than whats posted on this site.

I had the dash screen fail - chimed, said reduced driver assistance (sometimes multiple times), then the screen rebooted but sometimes it would stay black until the next restart. They had to replace the entire cluster but that was it for 12 months of ownership

Correct me if wrong.

If you use the under hood jump locks leave the hood open b/c it takes the 48V out of the charging path.

If you attach to the battery in the rear no issue.

Some refuse or point to the manual that says not to connect to the battery. I think that section is probably highly influence by lawyers.

I plan to add the CTEK extension to my X6.
As far as I know, the hood should always be open and you should never charge by attaching directly to the battery.

Here is the SIB, really doesn't add to what has already been discussed.

No, that is not what the SIB says. You can use a trickle charger <20 without any problems. The 12v battery will be charged and maintained just fine. It is the 48v battery that will not be charged however further discharge of the 48V battery could be prevented with the trickle charger.

My only glitch is the TPMS keeps malfunctioning. I've had it into the dealer 3 times. The third time I asked them to keep it as long as they needed and that I didn't want the car back until the problem was resolved. I got the car back and it worked properly for a few weeks and then the dreaded TPMS malfunction warning screen started reappearing. I'm taking it in yet again.

Every single other thing about the car is fine.
