Assuming the system (the gauge and the app) is reporting full at 20, you may have hit on something there. I'll try to remember to check the app with the next fill up. That would leave just shy of 2 gallons in "reserve," which could be built-in protection for not going dry unless you really, really meant to....

I'm getting really crappy mileage on the stretch of road between the local station and my house. I'm guessing 2 for lack of a better explanation, but I'm not really sure I trust the precision of the app.
Are you on Android? On my connected app, iOS, it just shows a % and miles til empty - not gallons left.

Android, and it only shows gallons (the US app - haven't seen the new app yet).

You bet! Maybe there's a setting in iOS that allows % or gal - iOS in general seems better supported by BMW, and more flexible. There are settings in Android that allow the display to be changed from metric to Imperial.

To reiterate and confirm; I was on 0 miles not -- and fill up was 22.10 gallons. I suspect if I drove it down to -- it would be 22.5 gallons.

I have been at home so thank you for your concern lol. There's a large chain of grocery stores in the south called Kroger that gives you fuel points when you buy stuff at their store. The discount is up to 35 gallons so we take two cars to get gas at one time. I've been trying to time it perfectly as to get the full amount but I'm now at 0% on the g05; i figured it was a good opportunity to ask how much of a buffer I have, if any. I guess we'll find out tomorrow if I made it or not.
Does Kroger sell top tier gas now? Or does the X5 not have a recommendation to use top tier gas in the manual? Or it does and you are choosing not to use tt gas?

Just asking because I'm considering buying an X5 and assumed it was recommended to use tt rated fuel.

Premium fuel is recommended, depending on location in the US it will be between 91-93 octane.

This is what I have for M50i

Fuel Tank Capacity: 83 L / 18.3 UK gallons / 21.9 US gallons

Pretty much identical once you round up/down.

this is the first i've ever heard the term 'top tier'. I'm not sure which brands qualify for that. but you can go all the way down to 89. it says so right there on the gas cap, not that I ever tried or planned to. We've been filling up at Kroger for decades in all our vehicles without issue. its cheaper there coupled with their fuel points program so that's where we go. I always get the highest grade and trust its as good as any other brand, idk, haven't really thought past it.

'Top Tier' fuel has nothing to do with the octane rating.

I'm pretty certain all BMWs recommend using TT fuel.

We use Kroger for our Jeep because of the savings as you mentioned and also because it does not recommend TT fuel.

A fairly large group of auto manufacturers discovered that there can be a significant difference in the detergents in various gasolines. They found that to prevent issues, the fuel needed a certain minimum level of them. So, the Top Tier organization was formed. They list which companies agree to maintain at least that minimum level of detergents in their fuel. FWIW, it's not uncommon for premium to contain more detergents than the regular or mid-grade, but that is not an octane related thing - it's for marketing and performance.

BMW doesn't indicate that in their user manual that I've seen in the USA. I did see a flyer in the dealership indicating that it was highly recommended. An occasional tank of fuel not on that list won't hurt anything, but if it's a regular thing, they recommend using periodic fuel cleaners. Talk to your service advisor and read up on the website.

I agree, sales people should bring this up to their customers to help maintain their vehicles in top operational condition.

I'm pretty sure Kroger fuel is Shell. I know this because you can use points at either station, or they have some sort of crossover that they advertise. Even the "kroger" fuel trucks have a shell logo too. that's listed on that website as being top tier.

Costco gas is listed as Top Tier as well, and in my area, it's usually $0.50 less than Shell stations (93 octane)

I just posted above. Mine is an M50i. 22.5 including the reserve. Drive it to empty "--" and fill up. You will see it is 22.5 when filling up to the point where the pump stops on it's own. Not including the few pumps rounding up for those of us with automotive OCD.

Never understood why people deliberately drive until their tanks are on reserve, especially for an expensive car with a performance engine. I usually start thinking about getting gas at 1/4 tank left, or less than 100 miles range left.

So basically, there is NO RESERVE on the g05. if you're at 0%, you're all but out of gas. That's interesting given: on my F15, it said 0 gallons/0 miles on the CD app, and in the instrument cluster. I went to get gas and filled up to 20.8 gallons. The manual says the tank capacity is 22.4 gallons. So there is a reserve in the last generation, but not in this generation. good to know.
