Why won't it charge

Got my 45e today ordered 07/07/20

Driven for 35miles pulled onto drive plugged in and refuses to charge, I'm sure I've seen this problem on a forum but can't recall where

Make sure that the charging plug is fully engaged (and if outside of North America), that may include both ends of the cable.

Did the light at the socket in the X5 light up, and if so, what color?

The electronic communication (well, it's not actually 'talking', but sending signals) is, the EVSE sends a signal (pilot) that says 'I have x amps available after being interpreted by the vehicle - PWM type of signal), and an interlock one. That interlock signal goes through the vehicle (and locking switch if it has one in some markets), and when the vehicle wants power, it sends a signal back that should cause the EVSE to apply power.

What brand/model wall charger are you using? I highly doubt it's the battery being too hot (trying to merge the info from Facebook and here).

It shouldn't make any difference if it's in the vehicle, but try the one that comes with it in the boot under the floor.

I have not had experience with the Menikes plug/socket, but make sure it is fully engaged. I don't know how much pressure it takes to fully open the shutters and engage properly. On the J1772 plug, there's a latch button, and if that latches, it's fully engaged but I don't think that exists on your plug. The interface protocols are identical, though.

Has it worked before? You said you just got it today. So this is your first charge?

The electronic handshake isn't happening. It does sound like the car isn't registering that a charger is plugged in. Not entirely sure yet if that's the car's fault though.

Trying the cable that came with the car does sound like a good idea to help rule things out.

That was the version of mine when delivered, and it had no issues...it is probably either a hardware issue in the vehicle, or the plug is not fully inserted. If it's the EVSE, trying the OEM one should tell you if that works or not.

From the factory, the default maximum charge setting may be 6A, but that would not prevent it from starting to charge.

Hopefully it connects / charges ok for you.

I'm in the UK (near Glasgow) and have the pulsar plus too - I got my car 1 week ago and have had charging problems - pulsar plus going red / error mode intermittently -now as of today pulsar plus and the 3 pin supplied charger also goes into error / red light as soon as you plug into the car.

There was one other forum member that took delivery of a new 45e a couple of weeks ago that had the wall / 7KW charger go into error mode on 1st day of ownership but hasnt since.

I'll be booking my car into the dealer again tomorrow - there must be some underlying issue with the car.

Be good to hear how you get on.

Pulsar support say there is no voltage going to charge box, not sure how it lights up if there isn't but perhaps they have an amazing new form of electric lighting

Installer been given deadline to fix by next Friday or to remove and refund (4th engineer visit)

I think worldwide, the supplied unit is a 10A one (probably different voltage and plug depending on where your vehicle was delivered). BUt, the maximum it can handle is 16A, so that should be about 60% faster...still not 'fast', but better than the units supplied in North America where it's still 10A, but 120vac, or half the power of people whose main power is 220-240vac.

Since it is charging properly, it doesn't sound like it's the vehicle's problem, it's the wallbox.

Yup. Definitely sounds like a wallbox problem and not the car.

Engineer came out yesterday removed the front and pressed a button and it worked

He had brought a spare so changed the entire unit just in case

Rarely, on occasion, mine will flash red. What I have found is that power cycling it will restore it to operation. Over the close to six years I've had it, that's only happened maybe 4-5 times, or less than once per year. No idea what triggers that on my EVSE. The internal logic on an EVSE is pretty simple. One with WiFi and some other features like power/voltage displays may have more complexity (than needed, IMHO).

I needed a wifi one to qualify for a $500 rebate from my city's utility company. I haven't actually used it yet as I'm still waiting for delivery, but hopefully it works well.

Eventually, EVs will become part of the network power storage, and need to be able to talk back and forth. Sounds like your utility wants to be able to turn your EVSE off under heavy network power load conditions. BMW doesn't (yet) support feeding power back into the network, but expect that will happen within the next 5-years or so in some places. From what I've read, it may be required in Japan now. CHADMo suports that feature, not sure if CCS does.

Having the same issue. I plug in the charger to my X3 and the Wallbox turns blue, clicks then goes red.

Any idea what button the pushed to make it work? Wallbox tech support is sending a new one but I think the issue is the same you had. Thanks
